ANGLING NOTES.
(BT "CREEL.") Fishing in theßakaia, Walmakariri, and Xshley rivers has boon very disappointing again during the last week. These rivers were yery dirty last weekend, and anglers were again keenly disappointed. These rivers have previously been uuhshablo at least six out of ten week-ends. \s usual the Soiwyn and 2s*o. 2 rivers were visited bv a largo number of anglers during the week-end, ana some exceptionally big bags were obtained. Individual catches reported ranged from tour to 21 fish per rod, and the- weight of fish from 2-Jlb to 13Jlb One fine catch of four fisli v.eMring 4-ilb, heaviest fish 1351b. was taken from the No. 2 by a local resident. . . . The Halswell was again visited by several anglers, and I understand some good bags were taken, especially on iNVturday night. It is doubtful if there is any place in the Southern Hemisphere where fish taken in a season could equal in quantity and size those caught in the streams running into Lake Ellesmere. Up to date this season the total weight of fish caught must run into quite a few tons. The Southland Acclimatisation Society have this season obtained 6,007).000' ova. Of this, 3,000,000 were sold, 2,.500,000 planted out, and about iiOO.OOO had been hatched, the small fry being liberated in a few small streams. In view of the fact that the North Canterbury Acclimatisation Society have in the near future to seek new property for the rearing of fish, etc., ib is to be hoped due consideration will be given to the question of much larger liberation of ova or fry, and consequently one cannot help being struck by tho, success which tbo Southland Society lias achieved fn establishing their hatching at Lake Te Anau. Now that the road is open to Lake Sumner this place may have much in its' favour for such a venture. Lake Clearwater is well worth a visit by anglers who wish good sport with the fly. Recently a visitor to this lako had a successful trip, landing a good bag on the dry Hy, averaging 51b per fish. As there is no bush or wood obtainable in this district, anglers contemplating a visit should take a good supply of fuel. Some good fish are still being taken from the Avon. One angler has-been v'erv successful, fishing in tho vicinity of Park terrace. . .
