TIRED OF BRIDE.
3IAORI YOUTH'S MATRIMONIAL ADVENTURES. (PRESS ASSOCIATION TELEGRAM.) GISBORNE, December 7.
An extraordinary story of the matrimonial adventures of a Maori youth was related in the Magistrate's Court this morning, when Matu Rategi was chaTged with failing to make provision for his wife.
According to the police, accused, who is but 21 years of age, married a woman of means aged 70, and, after having obtained a large sum of money from her, disappeared with a young woman. He was arrested 011 the Uliniaroa at Auckland, where he and the young woman had booked for Sydney under the assumed names of "Mr and Mrs Martell."
Detective McLeod,. in asking for substantial bail, said that accused became acquainted with a somewhat feebleminded old woman, who ou November i'nd withdrew £4OO from the Bank of New Zealand and £560 from the Post Office Savings Bank and handed it to accused, who paid it into his own account. On the following day the pair were married at the registry office. Shortly afterwards, the husband disappeared. i/Hc picked up with a young woman on the' coast, and together they went to Christchurch, and then to Auckland. There they were arrested after booking for Sydney. Of the money received from the woman, about £3OO was left.
Accused was remanded on bail of £SOO till Wednesday nest.
