LOCAL ELECTIONS.
HARBOUR BOARD OBJECTS TO HIGH COST.
Dissatisfaction with the cost of the recent local bodies' elections was expressed at yesterday's meeting of the Lyttelton Harbour Board, and it was decided to protest to the AuditorGeneral concerning the matter. The 'City Council forwarded! an account for £729 Lss as the Board's share of the cost. In 1923 the cost to the Board was £342 12s 6d and in 1925 £423 Os Bd.
The acting-secretary and treasurer (Mr C.' H'. Clibborn) stated that the Board could either pay the amount to the City Council or protest to the Auditor-General.
A number of other memberß expressed similar views, and Mr Clibborn said that it seemed to him that the amount was extravagant ; it had been used to get a particularly heavy poll. Mr H. T. Armstrong: It had particularly good results for the City. (Laughter.) Mr M. J. Miller: Make tho payment under protest. Voices: No good. Mr Miller said that while he understood that the amount would have to be paid this year, a protest might be effective so far as the next election was concerned. It was decided to make payment subject to the approval of the AuditorGeneral.
