CITY MILK SUPPLY.

TO THE EDITOR 0» THE PRESS. Sir,—Mr Herron in his report states: "I- respectfully submit that whatever vested interests are at stake that same should not be allowed to stand in the way of carrying out a reform so higHly important as the reform now under consideration, especially when the health and welfare of the community is at stake, and accordingly I have to express the hope that a Municipal Milk Department will be successfully established in your City in" the near future."

Mr Herron is apparently retailing these reports at £ls 15s or more per set. I have considered the report carefully, and am astounded to find that Mr Herron 'says no thing, of the condition of the milk-when the Wellington Municipal Milk Department started business, nor does he show any improvement that has been achieved up to date. •There is no. suggestion of any improvement. Christchurch has shown., (vide Dr. Pearson's report) 'BO per cent, grade A fresh" during the hottest months of the year, v and for tests car: ried out recently II per cent, improvement on these figures. Mr Herron speaks so dogmatically on these matters. What are his qualifications? Authorities from the other side of the world mostly are quoted—many perhaps written to order—for propaganda work. Is it not time we had an independent survey of tho Wellington milk supply? Brisbane, Sydney, Melbourne, Perth, Hobart, and Timaru municipalities are considering municipalisation of the milk supply. These towns would be well advised to collect further information before spending some millions of money—for what? That all milk be pooled and stewed according to requirements. Pasteurisation covers a multitude of. defects, and might be compared with a coat 'of paint on an old building.—Yours, etc., * H. BLISS. Christchurch, December 7th.
