ADDINGTON MARKET.
BEEF, MUTTON, AND LAMB
EASIER.
(BY OTO COMMERCIAL EDITOR.) There were smaller yardings of fat cattle and fat sheep and a rather larger entry of fat lambs, compared with the previous week. All classes of fat cattle showed a decline in prices, which was the more marked, in the case of all but tho prime medium-weights. Rcugh cow beef, of which there was a considerable entry, showed the larger drop in values. The fat lamb sale opened at a decline of Is per head, but afterwards made a recovery, though the market or. tlie whole was not quite up to last week 9 level. The fat sheep market was irregular and prime sheep barely maintained the previous week's values, medium sorts were down 13 6d to 0s per head, while inferior sheep were hard to toll. A number of passings took place throughout the salo -tho small offering of i.'.ore sheep consisted mostly of wethers, which met with a fair sale. Fat pigs barely maintained late rates and store pigs, particularly porkers, showed a decline in demand and prices. STORE SHEEP. Thero was a small offering of store sheep, mainly mado tip of shorn wethers with a few liens of ewes and iambs hoggets. As many of the pens were dealers' lots for which more money was a«kod than was offered by the small attendance of buyers, there were mo-e passings tliaa usual. The yarding o£ fat sheep was somewhat smaller than tho week before, a number of the pens either not being occupied or containing little lota, bo that tie offerings were below . ten full races. There was a fair proportion of . prime sheep, including North Island consignments and a line oi Chalharii Island sheep. With the exception of the outstanding lines, the quality of the yarding was very moderate. The demand, was more limited than at recent sales, and except for the best lines, which sold well up to the previous week's rates, but m cases a shade below, the bidding was slow, and a number' of lots were passed in. Medium sheep were easier by about Is Cd to 2s per head, and there was a greater decline in inferior sorts. Altogether, the market was an irregular one, and in a few cases sales were made at better prices than wsre obtained the week before. The top price of the sale for shorn wethers was 15s Id, for a pen of eight from J. Rudd (Greendale). A North Island consignment of 150 wethers made 37s lOd to 425, and 196 ewes 32s 4d to 35s Id. Mr 3 K. McMastcr (Pigeon Bay had in the best lines of ewes, 179 selling at 30s to 39s lOd. Tho latter figure was also reached by the tops of a line from H. McGinness (Methven). The range of prices was: — Extra prime wethers, to 45s Id. Prime wethers, 34s 6d to 38s 6d. Medium wethers, 30s to 31s. Light wethere, - 25s Id to 295. Extra prime ewes, to 39s lOd. The yarding of. fat cattle was smaller than that of the previous week, totalling 580, as against C-10, The quality was very mixed. There was a number of pens of prime heavy steers and a fair proportion of prime mediumweight steers and prime heifers, but ou the other hand there was a heavy entry of cows, many of them being rough sorts. Included in the entry was a line of steers from Palmerston North, and vhere were also consignments from the West Coast and the south. The sale showed a further decline in values equal to about 2s to 3s per 1001b on the average, the weakness being chiefly noticeable in plain, heavy steers and in rough cow beef, while prime handy-weight steers and heifers sold nearer to the previous week's rates. The latter were equal to 39s to 41s, prime 36s to 38s, heavy-weight 30s to 345, young cow beef 28s to 31s, rough cow beef down to 22s 6d per 1001b. The highest price was £l9 78 6d, reached by the tops of a line of steers from H. Edwards (Kaiapoi) and a line of eight steers sent in by J. 0. Hay (Pigeon Bay) made £l6 17s 6d to £l9 2s 6d, averaging £lB 6s 6d. The North Island consignment of 24 steers made £l3 12s 6d to £ls 12s 6d, and they were not equal in quality to the cattle that havo been coming from there this season.
