OPAWA CARNIVAL.
* TUG-OF-WAR CONTESTS. In connexion with tlio carnival , hold at Opawa school on Friday and Saturday last, great interest centred in the tug-of-war contests between leading teams in A grade (60 stone) and B grade (58 stone). Following aro the results, B grade pulling on Friday evening, while A grade and both finals were decided ou Saturday:— B GRADE.
First Round—Lytteltou Rowing Club (57-11) beat Lyttelton Railway (55-5) by half an inch; Lyttelton Fire Brigade (57) heat Glue Works No. 1 (57-5.) by 3i inches; Glenmore (57-3) beat Glue Works No. - (5513) by 7iu. Socond Round —Lyttelton Railway beat Glue Works No. 1 by 4J inches; Gluo Works No. 2 a byo; Lyttolton Rowing Club beat Glenmore by 5 inches; Lyttolton Fire Brigade a bye. Pinal—Lyttelton Firo Brigade 1, Lytteltou Rowing Club 2. A GRADE. Lyttelton Rowing Club (59-8) heat Eiffelton (57-5), bv 2i inches; Woolston Tanneries (59-7) 'beat Lyttelton Fire Brigade (58-13) by lijin.; Lyttelton Fire Brigade boat EiffeltOD by 1J inches; Rowing Club beat Woolston Tanneries by three-quarters of an inch; Woolston Tanneries defaulted to Fire Brigado for second placf, leaving the finals: Lyttelton Rowing Club 1, \Lyttelton Firo Brigade 2. ' In paying over the prize money (totalling £2l) at the conclusion of the contest, Mr T. W. West, chairman of the Opawa School Committee, expressed the appreciation of those present for the display. The Eiffelton (Ashburton) team, in a fine sporting spirit, came up to pull against A grade teams of considerably greater weight, and were beaten only after a hard struggle.
