A NEW COMET.
ASTRONOMERS BUSY.
(PBHSS ASSOCIATION TELEGRAM.)
WELLINGTON, December o
A new comet was observed at Wanganui at 8.35 on Sunday by Mr Hilton, and Mr Gawith, of Hawera. picked it up a few minutes later. It has a large nucleus, widely spread head, and large tail.
It is situated in the constellation Norma, which is further south than Scorpio. Its position was then given as sixteen hours five minutes right ascension, and 53 degrees south declination, but this morning Mr Townsend, at Hawera, reported the comet as being one of second magnitude easily visible to the naked eye, its position then being sixteen hours twenty minutes ascension and 52 degrees south declination. .
This afternoon a cablegram from Melbourne to Dr. Adams announced the discovery of the comet there on Saturday, but mutilation of the table message prevented any accurate determination of the position. [The comet was observed in Christchurch at about the same time as stated in the above message.]
