Mr Alan Whitelaw, travelling secretary, Young Men's Bible Class Union, arrived in Ashburton vesterdav.

Mr P. W. Rule, of Timaru, architect for the Ashburton War Memorial, visited Ashburton yesterday to inspect the work. Mr John "Watson, of Ashburton, has been appointed an honorary Child Welfare Officer. Mr F. Z. D. Ferriman has returned from a visit to the North Island. The Town Clerk (Mr W. Patterson), accompanied by Mrs Patterson, will leave on annual holiday to the Iving Country oil December 15th, returning about January nth. Warrant Officer W. Edmonds, in charge of the Ashburton military area, left for Burnham yesterday, to under}go a refresher course. Tie returns on December 10t.li. Car and Cyclist Collide. A collision between a car driven by Mr F. Fussell and a cyclist, Mr Chalmers Jackson, occurred in Moore street on Saturday night. Both were travelling in the same direction | when it is alleged the car struck tho cyclist. from the rear, knocking him off, inflicting an injury to j an ankle, and wrecking his machine. j Fishing. Fair fishing results «ere obtained by local anglers during the week-end. The mouth of the Eangitata river seemed to be the biggest attraction, for about 20 anglers visited this resort, with varying success. Only .about 12 trout were landed, none exceeding 61b in weight. The increasing popularity of the lakes in the Ashburton Gorge was in evidence over the week-end, when eight cars, including some from South Canterbury, visited Clearwater. Xine wellconditioned trout up to 01 b were landed by Messrs E. P. Y. Scaly and Picket, of Timaru. The Ashburton river was too discoloured for fishing. Municipal Abattoir. The following stock were slaughtered at the Municipal Abattoir, last month: Cattle 135 (4 condemned); calves 6; pigs 53; lambs 32; sheep 760. Free Place Examinations. The Executive of the Summer Bible Class Conference to be held at Christmas, met last evening, when the Eev. A. G. Irvine, presided. There were also present, the Rev. A. Whitelaw, travelling secretary Young Men's Bible Class "Union, and Miss Shannon, travelling secretary, Young Women's Bible Class Union, and a welcome was extended to them by the chairman. Eeferring to the garden party to be held at the property of Mr M. Bruce, Mr Whitelaw said he and Miss Shannon thought the gardens were ideal, as there were quite a pumber of facilities available for girls' games. The Registrar reported that 271 registrations had been received to date, 100 of these being local. Borough Council. The fortnightly meeting of the Ashburton Borough Council was held last evening. Present: The Mayor (Mr E. Galbraith), and Crs F. Z. D. Ferriman, W. H rf Bundle, F. W. Seldon, J. Watson, Thompson, F. J. E. Smallbone, J. McETHlnney, R. A. Collins, R. Kerr, and W. H. Eobinßon.
The Bank of New Zealand made application for a refund of £9 7s 6d, being half the total rate paid for the supply of wator to the bank premises for the years ending March 31st, 1926, 1927, and 1928. The letter forwarded by the Bank stated that Section 82 of the Municipal Corporations Act, 1920, provided for the levying of water rates, and contained a limitation that the rate for an ordinary supply of water to a building (other than a dwelling-house) shall not exceed one half of the maximum rate fixed in respect of dwellinghouses. The Town Clerk said he had investigated the matter, and considered the bank was liable. In any case, the Council could consider only a refund on the current year. Two men were sleeping on the bank premises. The application was referred to the By-Laws Committee for a report. A circular letter dealing with war trophies from the War Museum Committee, Wellington, was received. The Borough Inspector (Mr J. R. Richardson) reported* that during the past fortnight he had issued five building permits of a total value of £1355 10s. One case of scarlet fever had been dealt with, and five motor-drivers' licenses had baen issued.
The Addington School Committee was granted the use of the Domain on December 9th, and the EifFelton School on Decemßer 10th. Cr. Thompson suggested that next year the Council should consider the construction of a cricket pitch on the top ground, with a view to leaving the oval free for picnics.
Cr. Seldon said the cricketers should be allowed to remain on the oval, and that area near the hospital improved for picnics. The Mayor said the Council had no money to spend on construction of cricket pitches.
Hakatere Sports Club. The annual meeting of the Hakatere Sports Club was held last night, when Mr A. Cates presided. In his annual report, the chairman detailed improvements carried out during the year, chief of which was the erection "of a hall and the construction of tennis courts. With tho "proceeds of the New Year's Day sports, it was hoped to liquidate the liability. The balancesheet showed that the year commenced with a credit of £93 Os 6<L Tho receipts totalled £l9l 7s 13, and thß •x----penditure £157 3s 9d, leaving a credit balance of £34 3s 4d.
The report and balance-sheet were adopted. The following officers were elected: Executive, Mesdames B. Opie, W. .T. Burrows, F. Thomas, A. Cates, and W. Page, and Messrs F. Crum, A. Gates, F. Thomas, A. Thomson, P. Cookson, M. Knox, R. Shearman, H. Addis, L. S. Hopkins; hall committee, Messrs F. Thomas, A. Cates, and W. J. Burrows; tennis committee, Mrs Opie, Misses A. Cates, H. Crum, P. Anderton, and H. Page, and Messrs R. Putty, C. Shearman, R. Thomas, and G. Cates: entertainment committee, Mesdames W. Page and Opie, and Messrs A. 11. Todd, H. Addis, and M. Knox. In connexion with the sports meeting to be held at the mouth of the Ashburton river on New Year's Day, it was suggested that the programme include sports, tennis tourneys, swimming, and a baby show.

The Loyal Hinds Lodge, 1.0.0. F., M.U., held a very successful church parade on Sunday afternoon. The various Lodges, numbering nearly 100 members, including a large number of lady members, assembled at the Oddfellows' Hail in Grey street, and headed by the Ashbiirton Silver Band, under bandmaster Osborne, marched to the Hinds Hall. Hero the procession reversed, and, headed by tho D.G.M. liro. D. T. l'aterson, I.P.D.G.M. Bro. .1. S. Donaldson, D.D.G.M. Bro. W. Garrod, I'.D.G.M. Bro. 41. C. Hardy, D.S., and the local officer, marched into the hall. The service was conducted by the Bev. E. Hanna. Special hymn sheets were used and Mrs J. Marshall presided at the piano and Miss I. Hampton (violin) assisted. The oli'ertory, which realised £4 2s 11-Jd, was divided equally between St. Lnke's Church and the Oddfellows' distress fund. An adjournment was then made to tho Domain, where the band gave a concert, which was much appreciated. At 4 p.m- afternoon tea and refreshments were dispensed in tho hall to all visitors.
Preparations are well in hand for the school excursion to Timaru next Saturday, when a good attendance is anticipated. Milk and hot water can be obtained free of charge on the beach. The headmaster of the Hinds school conducted a proficiency examination last week, when there were candidates from Hinds, Maronan, Carew, and Ealing. The results are expected soon. The Rev. E. Hanna will commence Scripture lessons in Hinds School tomorrow morning, LONGBEACH. At a meeting of the Longbeach School Committee there were present: Messrs C. G. Tansey (chairman), G. Penrose, W. Payne, and C. Hanson. The chairman reported that Messrs Armitage, Andrews, Hughes, and Porter (architect), of the Canterbury Education Board, had visited, the school during the month. Inspectors Webb and Moody had also paid visits to the [ school. It was decided to hold the break-up on December loth. The chairman and the schoolmistress were asked to select the school prizes. The Waterton Tennis Club played its first match on Saturday last on the local courts against the Tinwald Club. The day was ideal for play, and tho courts were thronged with players and interested spectators. The president, Mr W. Taylor, the club captain deserve great praise for the way in which they, together with an enthusiastic bana of workers, completed the third court in time for play on Saturday. Tho following were the scores (Tinwald mentioned first): —Ladies' singles, 35 —18; men's singles, 18—33; ladies' doubles, 16 —6; men's doubles, 6—13; combined doubles, 28—27; total, 103 —97. The following players represented Tinwald: —Mesdames Gudsell, Hulme, Millichamp, Hockings, Misses S.vmons and L. Watson, Messrs M. Moodly, E. Bryant, S. Hockings, S. Hulme, W. Hunter, and E. Gudsell. Waterton Club was represented by: Airs Cornish, Misses M. McLaucblan, J. Cornish, C. Connors, E. Saunders, G. Soal, Messrs K. Taylor, J. McLauchlan, E. Taylor, H. McLauchlan, N. Cornish, and A. Tansey. Mr L. F. McCormack, of Dunedin, is visiting Longbeach. CHERTSEY. Mr and Mrs Eugene McSweeney, who have been on their wedding trip to Queenstown and Invercargill, are at present spending a few days with Mrs McSweeney, sen. On Saturday evening a number of Mr McSweeney's old friends in Chertsey formed _ a tinkettling party and were hospitably entertained. The evening was spent m cards, games, and music, songs being sung by Miss B. Ramsay (Christchurch) and Mr Chas. McSweeney and Mr J. Allen. The health of the young couple was drunk with musical honours. Mr and Mrs McSweeney will leave on Thursday for Mataroa.
