A number of recommendations dealing with the subject of the trimming of trees to avoid contact with overhead lines were adopted at last night s meeting of the City Council. Tha Electricity Committee reported as follows : , The subject of tree trimming to avoid interterence with overhead lines has been before the committee on a number of occasions. bom e ol the technical literature recently to hand indicates that a considerable amount of attention has been given to this subject in the United Spates, and attempts made to educate both the staffs of public utilities concerned, and ilic members of the public affected, Th" Christchurch Public Utilities Committee recently set up a sub-com-mittee to consider the matter and report. A report was presented to the meeting of the committee held on triday, November 25th. The report, which was adopted by the Public Utilities Committee, submitted the following pioposals a betfcer understanding between tree owners and the authorities who carry out the work. (b) To study the effect of tree interference on public services (both branches and roots), . (c) To study the growth in its entirety, sucli as type to plant, how and when to trim. , (d) To consider education of owners and staff in field work. (e) To consider economics of proposal. (f, To formulate a programme at once reasonable and practical, and ensure its successful operation. ' After discussing these proposals, the following recommendations were adopted:— (1) That all authorities concerned be asked if they would be willing to consider the proposals outlined, and undertake some publicity on the lines Suggested. • 1! 1, T (2) That the services of Mr J. Young be sought for the purpose of arranging lectures and field work in connexion with tree growth generally. (3) That a small publicity committee he set up to arrange suitable programmes, such as time and place of lectures, news and the education of persons interested. (1) That it be the endeavour or all members to submit to the Public Utilities Committee, as far as possible, any information coming under their notice regarding the proposed removal, replacing or planting of roadside trees.
Tho Electricity Committee is confident that the two main suggestions: (a) Tlie instruction of electric lines staffs in the proper trimming a.nd pruning of trees; and (b) The issuing of suitable information, both as regards the need and aims of tree trimming, and the best type of tree to plant for roadside purposes, merit the active support of all local bodies. Under the circumstances, the Committee recommends that the Council should support the recommendations made, and the issuing of some publicity matter on tho lines suggested. The report was adoptod.
