SUMNER ITEMS.

Personal. It is expected that Mr J. F. Menzies, of the Eastbourne Borough Council, who has been appointed Town Clerk, will take up his duties in Fcbruarv. Mr Menzies had ten years' experience in the office of the Invereargill Town Clerk, four years' of which were as Chief Accountant, and Assistant Town Clerk. He resigned to take up the position of Town Clerk of Mataura, and left there, after five years of service, for Taihnpe. In that town he not onlv carried out the duties of Town Clerk, but was in charge of all the outside works. In 1024 he was specially engaged by the Eastbourne Borough' Council as an expert in municipal accounts, anil affairs, to report on their involved financial position. After his report had been read and considered he was offered the position of Town Clerk and manager of the ferry service.

Tennis. The fourth of the series of fortnightly tournaments conducted by the Sumner Club resulted in a win for Miss Muriel Wood in the Ladies' division and a tie between R. H. Henley and N. 11. Barlow in the men's division. Cricket. The first of the trial matches for the purpose of selecting teams for the interBorough contest was played at St. Leonard's square on Tuesday and Thursday evenings. The Sumner Club, batting first with 16 men, made 105, Balph Newburgh being top scorer with 20. Other scores were: Kempthorne 13, Mc.Be.ith 12, Smith 10, Knox 6, Gerard 6, Barnford 5, Prebble 4, Glackin 2, J. Merritt 2. Bowling for the Rest, W. E. Merritt took five wickets, R. 11. T. Hamilton five, V. Jensen three, and K. Shrimpton one. The Rest, batting two short, made 87, \V. E. Merritt being top scorer with 32, other scores were, Hamilton 10. Shrimpton 18, A. M. Don 15. Mt. Pleasant. Advice has been received from the Minister for Education, that the Mt. Pleasant School will be constructed on the Temuka plan. A certain amount of dissatisfaction is felt over the decision, especially as. the Minister expressed himself as a supporter of the Open-Air Schools League. The growth of Mt. Pleasant has been most marked during the past year or two, and at present three houses are in course of erection. With the erection of a school the district should go ahead rapidly. The erection of the tram shelter at the tram stop has been held in abeyance in the meantime, owing to the somewhat heavy expense. It is hoped that the work will be commenced some time in February. Burgesses' Association. The Rev. W. McAra presided over the monthly meeting of the Sumner Burgesses' Association. Reference was made to the resignation of Mr W. V. Siddall, Town Clerk, and a motion was passed that the Association learned with regret that Mr Siddall is severing his connexion with the borough, and desires that some public recognition be made of his services during the last eight years, and that the chairman interview the Mayor in regard to the question. It was decided to support the Horticultural Society in promoting occasional practical demonstrations on horticultural subjects by experts. An alteration of the method of advising when meetings were to be held was approved. Horticultural Society. A very interesting and instructive lecture under the auspices of the Sum-ner-Redcliffs Horticultural Society was given by Mr W. A. Erasmusson in the Methodist Schoolroom. The Mayor, Mr W. H. Nicholson presided over a large attendance. The lecture concerned the art of arranging flowers, to obtain the best results. Mr Erasmusson demonstrated with bowls, bouquets, wreaths, and sprays. "Bring and Buy." On Thursday a Bring and Buy afternoon was held by the members of the Sumner Presbyterian Church in aid of the new Sunday School fund. A very pleasant afternoon was spent and a satisfactory amount of money was raised. The following were the stall holders:—Plain work stall: Mesdames A. Topping, S. Sherrard, and Smith; novelty stall: Misses Killner and Gate 9; afternoon tea: Me9dames J. Browne, H. Gardiner, and J. Langdalc; cakes and produce, Misses J. Gerrand, and D. Alexander; work stall: Mrs L. P. Longuet. A programme of musical items was given by Mesdames Cook, J. Langdale, Wilson, Smith, Denham, and Miss Hunter, elocutionary numbers being contributed by Mrs Vance and Mr Duggan.
