N.Z. CHAMPIONSHIPS. CHALLENGE RACES. There have been four challenges lodged by aspirants for provincial athletic honours against those selected to represent Canterbury in the forthcoming Dominion athletic championship meeting. Those challenge races were decided at tancaster Park last evening, but only in one case was the challenge sustained, E. B. E. Taylor beating G. Morrison for his place in the mile. Details: — Mile Challenge Race—E. B. E. Taylor bent G. Morrison. Morrison led by a few yards all the way until the last twenty yards, when Taylor burst through to win by tbree yards. Time, 4min 49 2-ssec. 220 yds Challenge Race—C. L. Allen beat K, R. Johnston. Allen was quickly off the mark, and reached home two yards .ahead in 23 2-ssec, thus holding his place. Id the 440 yds K Johnston retained his title against Thompson in the challenge. Thompson shotfed a good pace over the first lap and a half, but Johnston's staying power asserted itself in the last fifty yards. He Avon by four yards. .In the long jump, A. E. Joseph successfully staved off tho challenge of J. K. Dickson. Joseph's best effort was 19ft 4£in, while Dickson did only 18ft Olin.
