ROWING NOTES.
(By Coxswain.)
Sez\. week tho river sweeper will be operating on the course used by tho City clubs. The Avon Club has secured the use o£ the old fire station in Chester street from the City Council, and will train from Madras street to Victoria street, a stretch of almost half a mile. Bowing through tho centre ot the town should prove a good advertisement for the sport. The Union and Canterbury Clube intend to do their training at Burwooo* over a couree which has been prepared for the inter-collegiate raAs between Christ's College and Wanganui GolOn Wednesday evening il challenge race wa3 held to decide which crew would represent the Avon Club as the No. 2 crew in the youths' singleß at Lyttclton. After a gcoct contest over the first quarter of a mile D. Ironsides beat A. Wood ham, the challenger, by two lengths. A. Frame i« the No. 1 selection. A. Harley and G. Hush worth are swinging along well m the youths' pair, while the maiden pair, Uatchelor and Barber, are getting a lot of pate out of their boat. Stroke is one of tho fittest men on the liver this year. The mnior pair. Palmer and kitten,' will take a lot of beating. In the senior pairs, both crews have only been out once, but the Stiles brothers always row well in clinker boats, and they should be ablo to «t«nd the Canterbury crew at Lyttelton. Ihe maiden double sculls, E. Heatley and J. Lane, are showing great improvement under the tuition of Mr Barkle. On Tuesday evening the jinal of the President's Cuu of the Union Club resulted in a win for F. Rogers (str.), G. Duggan (3), R. Layton (2), H. Thiele (bow). This is the fourth successive year F. Rogers has rowed in the winning crew. The senior pairs' No. 2 crew, Whittington and Bush, hare been challenged bv F Home and W. Greenway. As there is not much between them, a good race should eventuate. The No. 1 crew, G Dusgan and F. Rogers, are both rowing good blades, and get plenty of run cut of their boat. The junior doubles, Bush and Greenwav, are not going so well as last year, and will probably find the Avon >o. 1 crew, Barkle and Batchelor, a toutrh proPosition. In the maiden doubles, the club will be represented by two promising boys in A. Rogers and E. Weir. In the Canterbury Club a change has been made in the junior pairs, F. Moon replacing H. L. Stephenson. The crew should race well. M. Styche is out of town ii:d will nrobaolv withdraw from the maiden rairs. The club will b» represented by W. Day and C. Griffen. Hill and W. J. Brown are training hard for the junior doubles, and may challenge the junior pairs. The oluVs best crew appears io be the maiden double sculls, Godfrey and Coster, and for novices they are eculliß* rally well,
