CHILD SCALDED. (fIPBOIAT. 10 ?HS PHI3S.) GREYMOUTH, November 23. Through upsetting a vessel of boiling water over himself last evening, the' eighteen-months-old son of Mr B. Gibbons,, of Camerons, was severely scalded about the body, besides suffering from shock. He was taken to the Grey Hospital and is reported to be making satisfactory progress. Ten Mile Landslide. With reference to the offer of the Minister for Public Works to provide a £ for £ subsidy for the repairs to the road at tho Ten Mile, the County Chairman has telegraphed Mr H. E. Hoiland, M.P., as follows; "Many thanks for prompt reply. The Council would request that the Minister be asked to increase the subsidy to £2 for £1 owing to the financial position of the Council. The County Chairman haß received the following telegram from the Minister for Public Works: "The Westport-Grey Coast road Ten Mile slip matter has been reconsidered and I am agreeable to provide a Government subsidy of £oU 13s 4d—£2 ftfr £1 on the estimated cost £772." Motor Services. It is reported that a company has been formed to organise motor-car services between Greymouth and Beefton and Eeefton and Greymouth. Personal. Mr W. Wilsou, manager of the Hokitika Savings Bank, and Mrs Wilson, who are spending an extended holiday in Britain, will leave England on their return to New Zealand early in March next. , Mr Fergus Barrowman, assistant-secre-tary of the Greymouth Harbour Board, is confined to "his home through illness. Mr A. E. Lovell, passenger agent for the North Island Eailways, left this morning for the Eranz Josef Glacier. Mr Lovell is making a tour of the South Island with a view to promoting greater interest among North Island residents in the South Island scenic attractions. Mr E. King, whose marriage to Miss Bently took place to-day at St. John's Church, Westport, was entertained by his numerous friends at a social function in Methveo's Hotel, Westport, last eve- ing, when Mr Methven, on behalf of the gathering, presented Mr King with a silver tea service. The death occurred at the Eeefton Hospital last evening, after a long illness, of Miss Phyllis White-, eldest daughter of Mr John White, of Blacks Point, at the age of 18 years. Mr G. E. Hunter and Miss Hunter (Christchurch) are visiting Greymouth. Okarito Harbour. In connexion with the proposed harbour improvements at Okarito, soundings were taken recently in varioi s directions from the Okarito bar, commencing from two fathoms and extending to about ten fathoms in the road-
stead. The ketch Elsie was used in conjunction with the survey. Gold Mining Revival. It is reported that the introduction o-" hydro-electric power in North Westland will be followed by an important revival in the gold mining industry. Several propositions are under _ consideration, somo being on the point of being taken up. In certain instances where prospecting has been in hand, some very encouraging results have been obtained. Continuous Telephone Service. •It is expected that t> continuous telephone service system will be inaugurated at Hokitika before the Christmas holiday period. Grey Diamond Jubilee. The Westland Progress League, at its meeting last evening, decided to co-operate with the Mayor of treymouth in assisting towards the s cess of the Grey district diamond .1' lbl1 " celebrations in February and Mareft next.
