NORTH CANTERBURY.

. ♦- CHEVIOT. At the last meeting of the Presbyterian Ladies' Guild there was a fair attendance, over which the president, Mrs T. Stevenson, i presided. At the conclusion of the business, afternoon tea was served. The very broken weather experienced recently is considerably interferring with shearing operations, and a number of farmers who expected to catcb the first wool sale will be unable to do so. Several sharp frosts have been experienced recently, which, in addition to cutting back potatoes and other tender plants, have played havoc with the fruit trees in the district. Great improvements are being made to the Parnassus-Waian road by a largo gang of men, under the Public Works Department. In many parts the road the grades are being reduced and culverts are being placed over a number of the .worst streams. The improvements will be greatly appreciated in this district, as it shortens the distance to Waiau and other parts of the Amuri'County considerably. The Cheviot Amateur Sports Club has voted the sum of £6 for children s sports, to be held in conjunction with their annual meeting. The congregation of St. Johns Church has decided to revert to 7 as the hour for commenting the evening service. The next of the series or inter-congregational visits arranged bv the vestry of St. John's Church, is to take place on Sunday, December 4th, when a visit will be paid to Parnassus WADDINGTON. A most enthusiastic gathering of ladies from the surrounding district was addressed by Mrs T. E. Taylor, Dominion Secretary of the W.CRT.TJ., in the Waddington Methodist Church on Tuesday afternoon. Miss B. Harland secretary of tho Canterbury branch, also gave a short address on the aims and objects of the Union. The Eev. A. L. Witheford occupied the chair. A motion was passed that a branch of the W.C.T.U. be opened at Sheffield. Mrs Taylor conducted the initiation of about fifteen new members. The officers elected were as follows: President, Mrs a. L. Witheford; vice-presidents, Mesdames D. J. Hawke, R. Colthart, A. Clark, J. B. Baxter; correspondence secretary, Mrs J. D. Clark; recording secretary, Mrs E. A. Adams: treasurer, Mrs J. Inwood presided over a meeting of the Southbridgo Lawn Tennis Club, when it was decided to make an amendment to the ladder ru»e providing that each player should have the right to challenge the two players above him. AKAROA. A rink from tho local bowling club visited Chorlton on Saturday, and played two games against a rink from the home club. The visitors were successful in winning the aggregate by five, the final scores being: Akaroa 43, Chorlton 38. It was intended to play a third game, but the heavy rain caused an abandonment of play. The match took placo on Mr W. Craw's green. Details of the individual play are as follows, Akaroa players mentioned first:—G. Armstrong, A. H. "Williams, S. W. Hayward, P. J. Eccleton (s) 27 v. A. Shuttleworth, H. Craw, C. Craw, W. Craw (s) 15. Second game: Chorlton 23, Akaroa 16.' The death occurred on Monday, morning, at Christchurch, of Mrs T. MeCaughan, who had been a resident of Akaroa for several years. She suffered a severe illness some months ago, from which she appeared to have recovered, but about three weeks ago she returned to Christchurch, and the news of her death was keenly regretted by all who knew her Beside the husband, a young family of three are left to mourn their loss. For the last few days the weather has been unusually close, and generally terminating in a sou'-wester towards evening. The heaviest rainfall was on Saturday and Sunday night, when a total of .56in was recorded. Constable J. E. Barwiek, of Oamaru, accompanied by his wife, is spending his annual leave on the Peninsula. Both Mr and Mrs Barwiek are ex-Peninsula residents and have a wide circle of friends. The annual rose show, promoted by the Akaroa Horticultural Society, is being held here on Saturday. A number of Junior National Scholarship candidates are commencing their examinations here to-day, Miss E._ M. Bruce having been appointed supervisor. The inter-club tennis match, the first of a series of three between the Domain and Akaroa Clubs for the Surprise Cup, will be played on the Domain court today- L - ' e tx. A meeting of. the executive ot the Boy Scott troop was held on Monday evening, there being present: Mr G. Armstrong, president (in the chair), Scoutmaster A. C. Purchas, Mrs W. Green (secretary), Messrs \V. Green, T. E. MeKenzie, and F. J. Wright. The scoutmaster reported that he had not vet finally appointed an assistant scoutmaster. Mr Wright was deputed to interview Mr B. J. Baillie, and request him to act as examiner of the bugle test. The annual trek will be commenced on January 2nd, and the scoutmaster outlined the route, which was via Purau track to Port Levy, and returning through Pigeon Bay, the whole journey being completed by the Saturday of the same week. Necessary' arrangements were made for holding a social and scout display on December 16th. The matter of building a Scout meeting-room was fully discussed, and it was decided to obtain specifications of a building required, aud approach the Borougli Council with a request to lease a portion of one of the reserves at a nominal rental for a term of vears.

HORNBY-ISLINGTON. There was a very large attendance of dancers and card players at the long night euchre and dance held in the Orange Hall on Monday evening, organised bv the Ladies' Social Committee of St.* Columba Parish Church. The euchre tournament was held in the card room. The prizes were won by Mrs Grant and Mr Watson, and consolation prizes were awarded to Mrs Black and Mt Taylor. Dancing was carried on in the main hall until 1 a.m. There were several streamer and novelty dances.

Mrs Mealo and Mr D. Kitchio were, the winners of the lucky-spot waltz, and the prizes for the Monte Carlo waltz were won by Miss Collinson and Mr Collinson. The hall was prettily decorated, and a'dainty supper was served by the ladies. Mr Bainbridge's Orchestra supplied the music, and extras were played by Miss L. Freeman. Mr.J. Marsden carried out the duties of master of ceremonies.

Tho weekly euchre tournament was held in the Orange Hall, Hornby, on Saturday evening. The attendance was good, -and the prizes were won by Mrs Fisher and Mr Motz. The aggregate prizes for the past month were awarded to Mrs Motz and Mr Cooke. SHEFFIELD. The closing meeting of the East Malvern Band of Hope was held in the Oddfellows' Half. The driving rain had little effect on the attendance and the items given by the prize-winners -oi the Band of Hope competitions in Ch "f" church were much appreciated. The prize-winners of the local competitions were as follows: Gordon McLay, Eon Grafton, Bay Grafton, Mildred- Humm, Violet Voice, and Cecil McKnight. The visiting concert party was decidedly talented and delighted the audience with song, recitation, and dance. Hie programme was as follows: Vocal duet, "Beautiful May," Misses Doris Donclly and Gracie Nixon; recitation, "So (lid I,"' Miss Valerie Cater; song, "Sing Sweet Bird," Miss Kathleen Chappie; recitation, "When Shall We Win, Doris Donelly; song, "How Lovely are Thy Dwellings," Miss Gracio song, "Little-Lady Wideawake, Valerie Cater; recitation, "BridaLMorn Kathleen Chappie; "Dream Minuet, "Arc You Going to Dance," Misses Doris Donelly and Gracie -Nixon; recitation, "Sherwood," Miss Valerie Cater; song, "Stay with mc Summer Miss Doris Donclly; recitation, "Dish Washing," Miss Gracie Nixon; song, "None So Pretty," Miss Kathleen Chappie; humorous recitation, the Dentist," Miss Gracie Nixon; song, "Kreisler's Cradle Song," Gracie Nixon; recitation, "Janie Brown, Doris Donellv. The quarterlv meeting of the loyal Malvern Lodge No. C 247, 1.0.0. F., M.U., was held on Monday evening, when N.G. Bro. L. L.
