THE WILDING SHIELD. [THE PRESS Special Service.] WELLINGTON, November 23. To-day the Wellington Lawn Tennis Association decided to accept Auckland s challenge for the Wilding Shield. The match will be played in Wellington after the New Zealand championships, and the acceptance is conditional upon the Wellington players having returned here by the time that the Aucklanders are passing through. RANKING MATCH. A match for fourth place on the Canterbury ranking list was played at the • United ten; nis courts yesterday, when P. G. Greenwood beat B. B. Loughnaii, 7-5, 6-4, after a very hard-fought game. ■ The match was a very interesting one, both players driving vigorously, Loughnan placing some oxcellent shots down the line. With the score at 5-5, Greenwood was playing a better game, and took the next two games and set. The second set was also closely contested, although Greenwood's placing gained him many points. He won tho set 6-4. The matches between D. F. Glanville and 0. Angas. and between T. W. Patterson and K. J. Walker wore not played. Walker will meet Patterson this afternoon. ASHLEY Y. BALCAIRN. Mr Hamilton Price, the leading handicapper and lawn tenniß writer, ranks the first twelve tennis players of England as follows: Higgs, Gregory, Greig, Austin, Crole-Kees, Kingßley, Lester, Turnbull, Lycett, Sharpe, Hughes, and Powell. He describes Higgs as the only potential champion, because he alone has acquired controlled speed in his forehand and backhand.
