LYTTELTON NEWS.
Personal. Mr W. T. Mercer, of West Australia, is at present on a visit to Lyttelton. Mr Mercer is a native of the port, but has been away for 43 years. Magistrate's Court. Mr H. A. Toung, S.M., presided at the Magistrate's Court yesterday. For a breach of his prohibition order, James Petrio was convicted and fined 10s and costs 10s, in default three days' imprisonment. Sade Hamod, an Arab fireman in the steamer Sutherland, was charged with having wilfully disobeyed a lawful command while the ship was in port. He pleaded not guilty, and said he was too ill to work. Captain J. Potts, master of the Sutherland, said defendant had given trouble during the voyage. He was disinclined to work and had influenced others of the crew. When the Bhip was lifting her anchor on Monday morning preparatory to berthing, defendant was ordored to perform certain duties, but refused, saying ho was sick. He had been examined by a doctor- in port, and was found to be in ordinary health. Defendant was convicted and sentenced to two days' imprisonment. He was also ordered to be placed aboard his ship bofore she sails to-morrow. Under a judgment summons, F. Walklin was ordered to pay William Young the sum of £8 5s 6d forthwith, together with solicitor's fees, in default nine days' imprisonment
