BOROUGH COUNCILS.
♦ KAIAPOI. • ■ The fortnightly meeting of the Kaiapoi Borough Council was held last night. Present —The Mayor (Mr H. C. Revell), and Crs. H. Mcintosh, It. J. Dunn, F. Thome, D. Whyte, W. H. A. Vickery, A. Linklater, J. D. Williams, E. J. Pollard, and P. Debenham. The Hon. Mr Bavin, Premier of New South Wales, wrote thanking the Council for its message of congratulation on his election. Mr H. H. Thompson, Wellington, wrote •with reference to the urgent need of compulsory third party motor-car insurance. The letter was received. Mr B. Penlington, Director, Kaiapoi Technical Classes, wrote submitting a report on the classes for the past year, and appealed for a continuation of the Council's financial support. The letter was received, and the usual donation of £lO was made. _ The Town Clerk, Wanganui, wrote submitting the following resolution:—"That this Council protest' to the Government that the amount of the proposed petrol tax, 4d per gallon, is excessive. That the tax should be reduced by one-half, and that no exemptions should be granted. Further, that all cities and boroughs within the Dominion be circularised and asked to support the Council's resolution," .and asked if the Council would favourably consider giving support to same. The letter was received. The chairman, of the Local Government Loans Board wrote with reference to an application to raise the supplementary electric supply loan £4OO, and asked for copies of the trading and profit and loss accounts for the years 1926 and 1927, and also asked to be advised as to whether the amount of £4OO could not be met from the general account or the electric supply account, as the latter account had apparently resulted in an accumulated surplus of £3400. The letter was received and referred to the Finance Committee, with power to act. The hon. secretary of the Kairaki Lessees' Association wrote advising that Messrs E. S. Mckenzie, G. Banks, and C. W. It was decided to open the public baths and to install chutes at either end. Mr F Ellenberger was appointed caretaker It was decided to make further application to the Telegraph Department for the installation of a slot telephone on account of the Bureau closing at 5 p.m. The financial statement showed:—Receipts £385 ss, debit bank balance £554 19s 3d.
