RICCARTON ROADS.

. 1 PROTEST TO DRAINAGE BOARD. "Some of the. roads in the southwestern area of this borough are the worst in New Zealand," stated a Councillor at a meeting of the Riccarton Borough Council last night. It was reported that several streets were in such a shocking condition, owing to the activities of the sewerage contractors, that they were not in a fit state to be used. The streets referred to were Maxwell, Edward, and Pevenll streets. It was decided to approach the Drainage Board on the matter. Cr. L. Ormandy stated that patience was a virtue that people in the southwestern area possessed in a marked degree. Some of the roads in that part were so bad that they should either be closed or attended to immediately. He had driven along some of them recently in the daytime, but it would have been almost impossible to do so at night. He moved that the Drainage Board be written to drawing its attention to the matter. Cr. R. H. Rankin ntated that before any further contracts were let, the contractors should be made responsible for the roads for a longer period than three months. It was going to cost the Council an enormous sum to keep the roads in order, and he considered that they would never get it out of the rates. Cr. R. Malcolmson: There is not sufficient supervision in the reconstruction of the roads. A strong protesj; should be sent to the Drainage Board. The Mayor: A letter should be sent to the Board stating that the roads would be closed unless something is done. The matter has not been exaggerated. Cr. Rankin: The liability of ihe contractors should be increased. The motion was carried. Cr. Rankin moved that the Drainage Board be asked to extend the period of liability for the maintenance of the roads from three to twelve months. He considered that the Board would grant tin' request. The motion was carried. Crs- H. Gudsell and L. Ormandv were appointed as a deputation to wait on the Drainage Board at its next meeting in connexion with the matter.
