SURFING AND LIFE SAVING.
CANTERBURY ASSOCIATION. The Canterbury Surf and Life-Saving Association met last night. Present: Messrs C. A. Cooper (chairman), J. Wallace, F- S. Taylor, N. McDowell, S. K. Bassett, A. Dalton, C. Atkinson, J M. Eales, C. J. Kite, C. Riordan, and D. V. Wilson (hon. secretary). H was decided to accept the invitation of the Sumner Life-Saving Club to attend the club's official opening on Saturday next, and the hon. secretary, Mr Wilson, was asked to represent the Association. The Canterbury Head Centre of the Royal Life43aving Society wrote offering the Association the whole and sole control of the surf examinations and awards in Canterbury for the coming season. It was decided to accept the offer. The following examiners were appointed: Messrs A. T. Bolam, G. Peurce, W. A. Smith, F. L. Collins, C. Atkinson, and C. A. Cooper. The Sumner Life-Saving Club wrote suggesting that for the word "positions" in section 6 of surf reel drill for seven-men teams, the word "go' ! be substituted. Mr Bassett, in moving to give effect to this suggestion, eaief that the idea was to bring the rule into conformity with the Australian Association's rule. After a brief discussion, the motion was agreed to. It. was resolved: "That trophies presented to the Association in future are to have no conditions attached." The chairman said that trophies could be given for any alarm or relay, but the _ Association would draw up the conditions After some discussion, it was resolved: "That the Black and White Cup be a competition to be held in the surf." Arrangements for the competitions for the inter-club trophies were left in the hands of the secretary. It was decided to write to the Otago Head Centre of the Royal Life-Saving Society and ask it to get in touch w 'th the Otago Centre of the New Zealand Swimming Association and arrange that the swimming championships do not clash with the life-saving events. Mr F. S. Taylor was appointed, instructor in connexion with the Nelson Shield team. Mr Tavlor was asked to ?V fc i? uch as ear 'y as possible wit" Mr H. S. Feast, the sole selector, with the view of getting the team selected -It was decided to ask the Dominion Council of the Roval Life-Saving Society to give a ruling as to whether the instructor of one team is eligible to compete with anv team from the same province. Regarding ffte proposed visit of an Australian team to New Zealand, the
secretary said that the New Zealand Swimming Association laid it down that no invitation could be issued until the expenses of the team were guaranteed. The chairman said that a conservative estimate (based on most of the members being billeted) of the expenses of the team was £350. As there did not appear to be any sonroe from which finance could be got, it was decided to defer the matter in the meantime.
