THE CHURCH AND THE PEOPLE.
TO THE EDITOR OF TIM PESSS. Sir,—The Presbyterian Church wishes to know the reason for its failure. The cause of failure lies in its conservatism and missing the necessities of modern life. "Feed my lambs'' is interpreted to suit 200 years ago, when people could not read. The same test to-day means leading and educating in national and domestic affairs, hence the indifference of Labour to the Church. Revolutions have been caused by the neglect to think far and lead the masses, the latter arguing rightly that its nominal leaders had had all opportunities given them, study, time for thinking, and most of the soft places in life, yet had done nothing, cumberer* of the earth. Apply the parable of the taients in this connexion and I wondes. what the "Master" wiH say. History shows what fearful crimes have been caused by ignorance and conscience in combination, proving that construction, the replacing of evil by good, is a Christian and civic duty. — Yours, etc. TRADESMAN.
