WEIRS IN THE AVON.
TO THE EDITOR 0» THE PRBSS. Sir, —The, appearance of the river since being dredged is sufficient justification for the amount spent on it (although I don't think the dredge has made a clean job, of it). The ratepayers are footing the bill for the dredging, then why not give them something for their money. I am a City ratepayer paying about £3OO per year in rates, and in services rendered around my property I do not get more than 20 per cent, of this amount in value. This amount has been contributed year after year uncomplainingly. The result of the dredging is the only real return we Citv ratepayers have had for many years. The foundations of City buildinfra will be more secure, our cellars drfer and more useful, and health improved. We now find an endeavour to filch this gain from us by "thoughtless sports," who want a little more water under their boats. We are told the weirs to be erected will not put more water into our cellars, so why should we complain? My answer to these sports is: "You have as much water under your boats as you ever had, so why should you want more, and at our expense?'. Tin's dredging is a tangible asset to City ratepayers, and will prove itself (even to the present agitators of "weirs") in the near future, when thn quickening up of the rebuilding of the older portions of the City, whicli to an intelligent observer must be near id hand. —Yours, etc.. CIVIS.
