Municipal Band. The Tcmuka Municipal Band recently decided to give a series of concerts in the country districts, and on Thursday evening Winchester was visited. The concert was given in the Public Hall, and there was a very good attendance. In the course of the evening the band, under Conductor Allen, played the following selections, each item being loudly applauded:—"Pirates of Penzance," "Alexandra," "Land of Hope and Glory," "Exile," and "Viscount Nelson." Musical items were also contributed by Bandsmen J. Horrack and F. C. Benbow. Dramatic Entertainment. On Friday evening, in the Dominion Theatre, three plays were presented by the South Canterbury Drama League on behalf of the Temuka Library. Unseasonable weather prevailed, and this no doubt affected the attendance. The plays were entitled "The Daughter," "Lonesome Like," and -"Between the Soup and the Savoury," and were staged respectively by the Timaru W.E.A., St. Mary's Dramatic Society, and the Temuka Players. Each of the plays were cleverly depicted, and reflected great credit on those who took part at the intervals. Very acceptable vocal solos were given by Mrs Ellis and Mr Horrack, each having to respond to encores. The Lyric Orchestra also added to the enjoyment of the evening. At the close of the evening Mr G. B. Cartwright thanked the performers, vocalists, orchestra, and all those who had assisted in the entertainment, Dr. Unwin responding on behalf of the teams. Bowling Season Opens. In glorious weather, and amidst delightful surroundings, the bowling season was opened on Thursday afternoon. At the end of last season _ the green was levelled and extensively topdressed, with the result that the opening date was delayed until Thursday to enable the young grass to obtain a good hold. There was an excellent attendance, which included a large number of ladies and visitors. Amongst the clubs represented were Eoslyn (Dunedin), Kaikorai (Dunedin), Fairlie, and Ashbury. The president, Mr B. H. Taylor, welcomed the visitors and said that their pleasure that day was tempered -with a good deal of" regret at the death of. Mr E. Brown, who had been patron of the club for many years. The president also referred to the death of a life member of the club, Mr Fred Morris. The Mayor (Mr T. E. Gumiion) then declared the season open, after which the Mayoress rolled up the first bowl. Out of respect to the late Mr F. Morris, who just about that time was being laid to rest, the club's flag was lowered to half-mast, and members stood in silence while the flag was being lowered. The visitors and members were entertained to afternoon tea by the president's wife, Mrs E. H. Taylor.
