There was an exceptionally good run of trevalli in the harbour yesterday, and the many fishermen who visited the wharves secured good bags. State as Competitor. Bef erring ,to afforestation work at a meeting of the Timaru Nurserymen's Council, Mr G. A. Green, Dominion secretary, stated that the State nurseries, instead of confining their operations to planting the waste lands of the Dominion, were actively competing in the retail nursery business by cut rates and free advertising of their stock at the ratepayers' expense, and in other ways, which it was considered no S.tate Department should adopt. There had been a very serious loss this season. All the forest nurseries in the South Island had had vast quantities left unsold, running in all probability to not less than a million trees. The bulk of this loss was owing to State competition. A number of forest nurseries and some owned by returned soldiers were closing down. Others were compelled to reduce their stocks. A hail storm occurred here shortly before 2 p.m. on Saturday, and continued for about an hour, when the weather cleared somewhat, only to be followed by intermittent showers later. The storm, following gloriously fine weather in the morning, occurred very suddenly, and many people were caught unprepared. The hail was preceded by loud peals of thunder, as dark clouds from the sou'-west obscured the sun. The sou'-wester increased in force, and driving rain set in for about half an hour, when the sun again broke through the clouds. The storm commenced just before the start of many sports, which had to be abandoned. Bowling.
