It is stated on good authority, remarks the "Nautical Gazette" of New York, that experts consulted by the United States Government have found a way to convert some of the old slow nine-knot boats of the laid-up fleet into fast 13 to 15-knot cargo liners. The proposal is to fine down tho lines at bow and stem and replace tho present propelling plant with small Diesel engines in series and a special type of screw. Byadopting small Diesels, the experts state, quantity production is possible with proportionately low attendant cost. It is estimated that the cost of this recouditioning will be no more than 60 per cent, of the cost of a new ship built in America, and at least 20 per cent, below cost of a new ship built abroad. If these figures can bo substantiated, and the tests lead to the conclusion that they can bo then there is possibly.one solution of America's merchant marine problem.
