BOOKMAKING CHARGE.
+ ACCUSED COMMITTED FOR TRIAL. [THE PRESS Special Service.] AUCKLAND, November 17. Any punter who is lucky enough to strike a winning double and cails round to his "bookie's" house for the money is not a gentleman, according to the evidence given at the Police Court this morning, when Harry Harks appeared on a charge of having carried on the business of a bookmaker on August 6th.* Chief-Detective Cummings prosecuted, Marks preferring to go before a Judge and jury ratner than be dealt with summarily. William Henry Bonner, hairdresser, said that he knew Marks, and had done some betting with him. Some days prior to the Grand National-race meeting, held at Christchurch, in August, Marks called at witness's shop. Witness took a double from .Marks at £2O to ss, .the two horses bein Beau Cavalier in the Grand National Steeplechase, and Wharneliffe in the Grand National Hurdles. Marks was given os four days before the racing commenced. Marks made an entry.in a small notebook at.the time. Beau Cavalier and Wliarncliffe won, but so far,' Marks'had not paid witness the £2O. When first asked about the matter Marks told witness he would "pay when he pleased." Marks said that witness was "anything but a gentlemar.," because he calle3 at his house. A constable gave evidence of betting with the accused, and a detective said he knew the accused to be following the occupation of a bookmaker. Acnsed pleaded not guilty, and was committed to the Supreme Court for trial.
