THEATRE ROYAL.

♦ JOSEPH HISLOP. The ordinary bqx plans for tho Christ- j church season open to-day at The Bristol. Judging from the largo preferential booking, a successful season is assured. Since his arrival in New Zealand, Joseph Hislop, who was born in Edinburgh, has been feted and acclaimed. The audiences at Auckland and Wellington were large and enthusiastic, and this noted artist won all hearts by his charming personality, as well as tbe wonderful beauty and range of his melodious voice. Now Zcalanders are hospitable people, and when they show a preference for visitors who have distinguished themselves in tbe world of music, letters, or of art, they display an enthusiasm that is sometimes embarrassing. In the case of Joseph Hislop, they have extended to him the glad hand of welcome, and they bid fair to make his stay in the Dominion one of the happiest events" in the life of a great singer and a splendid man. From Auckland to the Bluff there are people ready, nay anxious, to do him honour, and the sturdy Scotsmen of~'this fair land, who played such an important part in its settlement and wonderful progress, are leaving no stone unturned to do full honour to their illustrious countryman. Accompanying Mr Hislop is a pianist of European reputation, in the person of Alberto Sciarretti, who has already, by his wonderful pianoforte solos, made a name for himself in the Dominion. He will be heard in several solos by Italian composers. The Christchurch Joseph Hislop season should be highly successful. Already movements aro on the way by leading citizens and the heads of the musical profession to tender the singer a reception on Wednesday, November 23rd, and the local Scottish Society nlso will honour the illustrious visitor with their usual good Scotch hospitality.
