With tho view of improving the revenue of the port of Foxton, the Harbour Board of that township made application to the Minister for Finance for authority to raise a loan for the purpose of buying a steamer. The Minister wrote stating that he had discussed the matter in Cabinet. While generally admitting that the trade of tho harbour had much declined, it was not clear that it was altogether due to the causes given. Land transport, which had been much improved and extended l in recent years, must affect ports situated as Foxton was. It was pointed out that commercial trading in shipping was not a function of harbour boards, and an amendment of the Act would have to be made before any such undertaking could be validated. In view of the circumstances, the Government was unable to support the request. The Board, however, decided to send a remit to the next conference of harbour boards supporting a subsidy on shipping at small ports. CHRISTMAS GREETINGS TO FRIENDS ABROAD.
