THE LIBRARY. . A meeting of the committee of the Temuka Library was held on Monday evening, there being present: Mr G. B. Cartwright (president), Mesdames L. G. Scrimshaw, G. B. Cartwright, J. T. Smart, P. W. Salmon, W. J. Cartwright, T. E. SBiels, W. P. Evans, A.Eoutledge, and Miss Manson, Messrs P. W. Salmon, L. G. Scrimshaw, E. Blackmore, Kingston, W. H. McMillan, and W. P. Evans.
The librarian (Mrs T. Webb) reported that during the month ending- October 31st, 1032 books were exchanged (fiction 1012, non-fiction 20). Eight new novels were placed on the shelves, and twenty, novels by popular authors were presented to .'the library by the Eev. Father Bartley, S.M. These were very acceptable, and most of them were used to replace old copies on the shelves. Four new members joined during the month, bringing the membership up to 170. Subscriptions amounting to £lO 15s 6d were received. The public read-ing-room continued to be well patronised, the average week-day attendance being 100, Saturdays 150.
The chairman said that about 60 books had been placed on the shelves, and it was very pleasing to seo that the membership had increased. Members expressed the utmost satisr faction with tho progress that was being made, and on the motion of the president, seconded by Mr Evans, it was agreed that the librarian be complimented on the complete and satisfactory report submitted to the committee. Water Supply. In accordance with instructions given last Friday by the Mayor (Mr T. E. Gunnion) and members of the Borough Council, on the site of the excavations at Orari for the improvement in the Temuka water supply, Mr G. A. Bridges, C.E., has extensively deepened and' widened the excavation, and a further and final test, is to be made this morning at 9 o'clock. Personal. Miss L. Hickey (Christchurch) is' at present spending a holiday in Temuka, and is the guest of Miss May Martin (Shaw street, Temuka). Mr F. Wallace, who has been on a visit to his parents in Temuka, returned yesterday to Wairoa, Hawke's Bay. Condolence. At a meeting of the Temuka Library Committee held on Monday evening, the president (Mr G. B. Cartwright) made feeling reference to the passing awav of the late Mrs E. Kingston, wife of one of the Library Trustees, and a motion of condolence with the husband and relatives was passed, members standing in silence.
