FAIRLIE.
THE WEATHER. The weather so far this mouth has been vevy changeable, and not at all summerlike. There was a sharp frost on Saturday morning which played havoc with tender plants in the gardens. Peed is now very plentiful, and crops are doing well. Shearing has commenced and with better weather condition's would soon be in full swing. Caledonian Society. At a meeting of the directors of the Mackenzie Caledonian Society, Mr W. L. Bourn (president) was in the chair. The president introduced the new secretary (Mr J. A. Fraser), and extended a welcome to him. A letter waß read from the secretary of the New Zealand Athletic and Cycling Union, advising the dates available for the annual sports. It was decided to hold the fixture on December 28th. The local tradespeople will be asked to observe the weekly half-holi-day on that day. The secretary was instructed to write to the Railway Department, and ask that suitable train arrangements be made. The following committee was appointed to arrange for the annual dance: Messrs F. Geaney, R. Creighton, E. Miles, W. Close, and J. C. Aitken. The programme for the sports was revised, and will be the same as last year, except that the 220 yds (local) will be cut out, and 100 yds (local) substituted. In the piping events, Mr T. B. Cranipton offered a special prize of one guinea for a Lament. The following stewards were appointed: Starter, Mr H. Welsh; marker, Mr W. G. Black; weight events, Messrs D. O'Neill, J. McGregor, K. Anderson, and T. Darling; jumping events, Messrs N. T. Buckley, T. Westgarth, and J. C. Aitken; wrestling, Messrs E. Piiikerton, and W. Snushall; running events, Messrs J. Caskey, W. Close, T. B. Crampton, E. R. Beckett, and J. C. Aitken; dancing and piping, Messrs W. A. Robertson, W. Phillips, and J. E. Miles; blackboard steward, Mr F. Geaney; announcer, Mr J. C. Aitken; Press stewards, Messrs J. C. Talbot and F. H. C. Martin; timekeepers, Messrs A. J. Grant and G. W. Brown. Judges: Running, Messrs J. Barron, E. R. Beckett, and T. Clarke; field events, Messrs J. Trotter, J. Cameron, and R. Cartwright; wrestling, Messrs J. Cameron, R. Cartwright, and T. Simpson; dancing and piping, Mr D. D. Maedouald; handicapper, Mr J. W. Waldie. Pipe Band. The annual meeting of the Pipe Band was held in the band room on Saturday. Mr W. Snushall (president) presided over a fair attendance. The balance-sheet showed a good position, the credit balance being £53 lis lOd. The president congratulated the band on its improved position- A number of young players, he said, were coming on and should soon be able to play in the band. The following officers were elected: Patrons, Messrs T. D. Burnett, M.P., and Roderick Mackenzie: president, Mr W. Snushall; vice-presidents, Messrs L. M. Brice, C. Elms, Andrew Grant, R. A. Grant, and J. R. Aitken; drum major, Mr H. Welsh; pipe major, Mr G. Cowan; colour-sergeant, Mr R- Braddick; corporal, Mr J. Dick; drummer, Mr .L Thompson; side-drummers, Messrs R. Creighton, and R. Johnston; secretary and treasurer, Mr J. A. Fraser. • On the motion of Mr G. Cowan, Mr W. Phillips was unanimously elected a life member of the band, in recognition of his valuable services. Band Concert. On Sunday afternoon .the Geraldine Silver Band visited Fairlie, and gave a very enjoyable programme in the Domain. In the evening the band gave a concert in the Aorangi Hall, which was well attended.
Whale flesh was a recognised article of food during the- fifteenth and sixteenth eentunes. In England whale was either Foasted and served on the spife. or boiled and served with peas.
