General News. An inquest into the death of Amelia M. Paul, wife of Mr G. Paul, of Washdyke, carrier, which occurred suddenly on Saturday morning, will take place to-day. Vehicles Tax. The ruling of his Honour Mr Justico Adams in the recent case in which the Borough Council proceeded against the South Canterbury Power Board for the payment of fees under the Motor Vehicles Act formed the subject for a brief discussion at the commencement of the Council meeting last night. The Mayor (Mr G. J. Wallace) said that although the Council would not lose much revenue through the decision, there was a principle involved. The case had been won by the Power Board on a technical point in the compilation of the Act. He was sure that the Act had been passed so that each motorvehicle would be paying for the maintenance of the roads. He wa3 disgusted at the interpretation of the Act. "It is only a waste of money if wc are paying officers of the law to interpret the law in that way," he said. There was only one reason for passing the law, and that was to have vehicles pay for damage done to the roads. It was only looking for absurdities in the law to interpret the Act in any other way. It was wasting the time of the law-makers. "It would disgust anyone attempting to dp anything for the publie good," said Mr Wallace. On the motion of Crs. T. W. Sattertliwaite and A. L. Gee it was decided to send a remit to the Municipal Association to the effect that the Association enquire into the matter. Borough Council. The Borough Council met last night, the Mayor (Mr G. J. Wallace) presiding. The manager of the Borough Abattoir reported that 1560 sheep and 287 cattle were slaughtered last month, as compared with 269 cattle and 1551 sheep for the similar period last year. The engineer reported that during October eight building permits had been issued, of a total value of £SBBO, including five new dwellings, one house addition, one garage, and one shed. The output from the quarry totalled 600 cubic yards. The general manager of the electricity department, in his report, stated that there had been no interruptions in the Government supply during October. At the end of the month the number of consumers totalled 2557. It was decided to allow motor-vehicles to continue parking in the Timaru Park. The park curator was authorised to prepare the reserve opposite the railway station for beautification purposes. In reply to property-holders who petitioned for a roadway through Maori Reserve, it was decided that unless they contributed £550 towards the proposed roadway the matter would not be considered. Cr. A. L. Gee gave notice of his intention to move at the next meeting to the effect that the old Borough Council Chambers be sold, and that the proceeds from the sale be placed against the cost of the new buildings.
