JOSEPH HISLOP.
SEASON AT THEATRE ROYAL
IHie preferential box plans for the Joseph Hislop season in the Theatre Royal, commencing on Tuesday, November 22nd, open to-morrow. Already (hero is a pronounced interest in musical circles at the coming of the great tenor. "It is quite refreshing," writes a correspondent, "after so many Continental artists, to listen to one of our own countrymen."
Joseph Hislop comes with a reputation which lie has well maintained in Australia and in Auckland and Wellington, and huge crowds nightly fil! the hulls where he is singing. Being Scottish by birth, the local Srolttish people are naturally proud of their countryman.
After witnessing the effect which the late Signor Caruso's singing had upon his audiences, a distinguished critic once remarked that it acted like a fever.
A similar remark may be applied to the singing of Mr Joseph Hislop. There is a richness in the lower notes which is quite as fino as the magnificent, ringing tones' in the higher register. Although he had sung in the choir of St. Mary's Cathedral, Edinburgh, as a boy, Hislop entertained at that time no aspirations toward concert and operatic fame. His preference was painting. This ambition was not fulfilled, and it was in Sweden that he reached the turning point of his truly remarkable career. It was after singing in "La Boheme" at the Stockholm Royal Opera that the King of Sweden, who was present, conferred the decoration of Literature' and Arts upon him. His • success was so he was immediately engaged as principal tenor.
In the course of his opening concert in the Theatre Royal, Joseph Hislop will traverse a goodly part of the gamut of human emotions, from the passionate appeals of Verdi, and the sombre musing of Rachmaninoff, to the charm and. humour of "Mary of Argyle." Plans are at The Bristol.
