ASHBURTON.
CARS DAMAGED. A great deal of interest was caused to motorists travelling to and from Christchurch on Friday night and Saturday morning by a badly damaged motor-car which had been abandoned on the side of the main south road at Fairfield. The vehicle had turned over through the steering gear locking. The hood, in addition to the body and front wheels, was badly damaged. The car was driven by B* Cowles. A collision between two cars occurred on the main road at Irwell on Friday evening, and as the result, the left front portion of one car was badly damaged while (the other escaped little the worse of the impact. None of the occupants was injured. Donations to Hospital. As a result of the efforts of local enthusiasts who conducted sideshows at the Ashburton A. and P. Show, approximately the sum of £9O will be available for the County Hospital funds. The recent productions of "Mariette," and "Pair of Braces," has resulted in £34 being raised for the same, cause. Both these amounts will be subsidised by the Health Department, and it is understood, will be devoted to improvements in the hospital. Fire on Excursion Train. A fire developed from a hot axle box on the special excursion train running from Christchurch to Tiniaru on Friday night and as a result some of the woodwork comprising the understructure of one of the carriages was charred. The carriage was removed at Bankside and a delay of twenty minutes was caused before the train reached Ashburton. Visit to Oamani. The Ashburton Salvation Army Band under Bandmaster G. E. Argyle, accompanied by officers of the local corps including Adjutant 0. E. Ransom, made their annual visit to Oamaru during the week-end, leaving by motor-car and bus on Saturday afternoon, and returning last night. They were most hospitably received by the Army Corps at Oamaru. Sunday School Picnic. Unaffected by the rain which fell in the morning, a large crowd of children gathered at the Tinwald Domain on Saturday afternoon when the annual picnic of the Tinwald and Flemington Presbyterian Sunday Schools was held, under the direction oi Mrs W. Marshall, and Mr W. McKay, the respective superintendents, a comprehensive programme of sports was run off, the prizes for which will be presented during a Sunday in the near future. A pleasant time was spent and refreshments were provided. Sports Postponed, Owing to the heavy shower of rain which fell in Ashburton on Saturday morning, the opening of the Ashburton Swimming Club which waß set down for the afternoon, was postponed. All play on the tennis and croquet lawns, and bowling greens was also donedGirl Guides. A pleasing response has been received to the efforts recently made in Ashburton to establish a corps of the Girl Guides and as the result 32 enrolments were made at St. Stephen's Hall by the District Commissioner (Mrs G. h. Harold). A party of Boy Scouts attended the function and supplied a colours squad, enabling the newly-en-rolled Guides to salute the Union Jack. The gift of a handsome flag for the Guides has been made by Mrs E. B. Newton. Bechabites Conference. The annual conference of the Canterbury Provincial Council of the Independent Order of Kechabites was held in the Victoria Hall, Ashburton, on Saturday afternoon, when Bro. T. W. West presided in the absence of the Provincial Chief Ruler (Bro. J. Butcher, of Timaru), who is indisposed. Delegates present were: Sister G. Hastings Lever, Bros. C. A. Bascand, W. Bayliss, A. Martin, A. D. Hassall, T. Nuttall, W. F. Saunders, P. Saunders, J. Sarral, A. E. Forsey, B. Carter, T. Dwight, C. E. Wright, G. Spiers, S. Robinson, and J. Smith. ■ ■ ' A resolution of sympathy was passed with Bro. Butcher in his illness. The provincial secretary reported that there had-been an increase of 250 members during the year, making a total membership of 1500. A satisfactory increase had taken place in the number of women and juvenile members. The election of provincial officers resulted: Chief Ruler, Bro. A. E. Forsey; Deputy Ruler, Bro. G. Foster; superintendent of female members, Sister G. Hastings; Levite, Bro. B. Carter; guardian, Bro. P. Saunders; correspondent, Bro. A. D. Hassall. The installation was conducted by District Levite Bro. C. H. Bascand. The officers returned thanks for'their election and retiring officers were heartily thanked for their services. The. following motion was passed unanimous ly:—"That this Council appreciates the action of the Prime Minister in eliminating the State Control issue in the Licensing Bill, but records its strong objection to the proposed extension of the time between the polls and also the 55-45 per cent, handicap against Prohibition in regard to the votes cast." A copy of the motion is to be sent to the Prime Minister and the Canterbury members of Parliament. Armistice Day Service. A very impressive service was held in the St. Stephen's Anglican Church yesterday morning, antl in addition to commemorating Armistice Day, it served for the unveiling ana dedication of the large, handsome marbte memorial tablet given to the church by the late William Bysh and containing the names of all those members of the parish who lost their lives duriny the Great War. The presiding minister was the Rev. H. Nelson Wright, of Lower Riccarton, who was vicar at Ashburton during part of the war period, and associated with him was the Rev. J. F. Wiseman.
A parade from the Drill Hall to the church via Burnett. East, and Tancral streets was held under Captain E. C D. Withell, and included the Ashburton Band B Squadron of Canterbury Yeomanry Cavalry. D. Company, First Battalion. Canterbury Regiment, A Company 6th Cadet Battalion, Canterbury Regiment, C and I> Cos., 2nd Cadet Battalion Canterbury Regiment, Bov Scouts. Girl Guides. and returned soldiers. The musical portion of the service was particularly pleasing, being led by the full choir of fifty voices under the choirmaster, Mr L. C. Thompson. The following hvmns were sung:—"o God Our Help, 7 ' "Let Saints on Earth, "For Ever with the Lord," "Onward Christian Soldiers," and the National Anthem. Appropriate prayers were offered and suitable portions of the Scripture were read. The unveiling of the memorial tablet was carried out bv Colonel J. Findlay. C.8.. D.5.0.. who served throuehout the South African and Great Wars.
After he had dedicated the tablet Mr Wright preached an interesting and impressive sermon from Matthew xvi., verse 25. The Last Post was sounded and the service concluded with the Benediction.
Tlie tablet bears the following inscription:—"To the glory of God and in memory of these members of the Church in the parish of Ashburton who made the supreme sacrifice in the Great War, 1914-1918. and to whom the east window is dedicated." B. Woods. A brass tablet was placed in the church by members of the Upton family in memory of the late Second Lieutenant F. C. R. Upton, M.C., C.1.R., was also unveiled and dedicated. The service concluded with the Benediction. Through the agency of Mr F. Z. D. Ferriman, a booklet was printed containing the order of service and presented to all who attended as a memento of the occasion. The offertory, which amounted to £lB 6s 4d, will be devoted to the returned soldiers' graves in the Ashburton Cemetery. Motor-Cycling. The Ashburton Motor-Cycling Club held a run to the farm of Mr H. Brown, Sea-View, yesterday, when several members made the trip. They were hospitably received by Mr and Mrs Brown, and a number of novelty events were held during the afternoon. CRICKET. A fresh set of games wag commenced on Saturday afternoon when the Ashburton County Cricket Association's competitions were continued. The weather was threatening, but the games were got off without interference by rain. Play was continued till 7 o'clock in accordance with the advent of summer time. SENIOR GRADE. Ashburton A v. Ashburton S. Tn the senior grade match played on the Domain oral between. Ashburton A and Ashburton B, the latter went in first and knocked up 178. Harper performed the hat-trick when howling for the A team. Replying, the A's had 20 runs up for the fall of one wicket. Scores:—

Stephens made 112, the first century in club cricket this season. Tinwald's innings produced 238 runs. In reply, Mayfield made 69 runs for five wickets.

Biggar made 112, equalling the honour with the senior player for the first century of the seasdn. Other big scorers were Ross 37, Keenan 31, Kerr 32, McLauchlan 28. St. Stephen's then went in and made 40 runs for nine wickets (Morrison 17 being the only double figure man). Playing at Fairfield ' against Rakaia, the .home team made 73 (Hawksworth 12). Fairfield replied with 82 for seven wickets (P. Willis 21, Parsons 15, G. Willis 10). JUNIOR B SECTION. Playing on the Domain top ground against Tinwald, Celtic made 75 runs (Turner 24, H. Lennon 19), and Tinwald replied with 249 (Bell 88, A. Stills 60, McKenzie 51, Carroll 11). Bowling for Tinwald, C. Stills took three wickets for 12 runs, Heckings three for 3, and Bell three for 17. RARAIA. The monthly meeting of the Rakaia branch of the W.O.T.D. was held in St. Andrew's Schoolroom on Wednesday afternoon, Mrs Boag presiding over a good attendance. Motions of sympathy with Mr and Miss Tucker and Mrs Oakley and family in the death of relatives were passed, members standing. A letter was received from Miss Lovell-Smith, Dominion treasurer, regarding the organising fund, and it was decided to send the Union's donation immediately. The Rev, J. Boothroyd wrote, inviting members to attend the Methodist Church on Temperance Sunday. It was to accept the invitation. "Refugees of Europe," an extract from "The Headway," was read by Mrs Boag.
