B. Beale (Wellington), who have been in Christchurch for Cup Week, leave for the north tonight. Mrs J. H. Grigg (Longbeach) and Mrs John Barker (Four Peaks) have returned from a trip to England. Mrs W. Menzies (Menzies' Bay) is at present a patient in Lewisham Private Hospital. Mrs J B. Norris and Miss Betty Norris (Fendalton) returned this week by the Niagara from a trip to England. Mr and Mrs H. P. Pettitt left last evening for the north, en route for Australia, *jngland, and the Continent, making London their headquarters. Misses Gloria and Caroline Joseph (Rossall street) have left for a holiday* visit to Wellington. Dr. and Mrs P. McEvedy (Wellington), who have been spending Cup Woelc in Christchnrch, are leaving for Wellington to-night. The following are among the recent arrivals at the Federal Hotel:—Mr Nicholas Geaney (Makikihi), Mr W. H. Buckland (Waiau). Mr J. Murgatroyd and son (Balmoral), Mrs F. B. Lloyd and daugher (Blenheim), Mr and Mrs Templer (Greymouth), and Mr and Mrs Ross Brodie and children (Rangitata). The engagement is announced, and the marriage will shortly take place, between Miss Marion Smith, Christchurch and Dr. James E. Sherwood, Sydney. Some of tlie most interesting of tho exhibitions at the Art Gallery have been those consisting of the works of a single artist. Next week a one-man — in this case a one-woman—exhibition will be opened. The artist is Miss Farnie Thomas, who is showing a number of her water-colour paintings of New Zealand and European scenery. There will be a private view on Monday afternoon, and the pictures will be shown daily until November 22nd. Mrs McQuilkin (Ashburton) is tha guest of Mrs T. Halley, Gloucester street. Mrs M. S. Case (New York) and 3lr and Mrs Walter Raymond (TiI maru) aro at Warner's HotelMr and Mrs A. H. Hope (Hawke's Bay) are at the United Service Hotel. Thirteen of the successful candidates in the elocutionary examinations, Trinity College, London, with Mr Alexander Watson as examiner, were pupils of Miss Lucy Cowan. Five of these obtained honours: one licentiate (diploma), one associate, three intermediate, six junior, and two preparatory division. The management of the Winter Garden announces its usual cabaret dance for to-night. Dancing will commence at 8.30 p.m., and continue until midnight. As a special attraction. Miss Bessie Macdonald's cabaret dancers will feature an operatic ballet. Bailey's Jazz Band have arranged a special programme of music. At the Liberty Theatre to-morrow evening a grand concert will be held for the purpose of raising funds for the purchase of a piano for the Reformatory Home. Mrs J. C. Holmes is the organiser, and by the courtesy cf Messrs J. C. Williamson and Co., leading artists of the Gilbert and Sullivan Opera Company, as well as local artists, will contribute to the programme. A pleasant evening was spent at the residence of Mrs F. G. Coombs, Riccarton, recently. The rooms were decorated with flowers of pastel shades, and dancing, games, and musical items were enjoyed. Keen interest was taken in competitions, which were won by Misses R. Campbell, L. Mills. Messrs C. Cormick, and S. Began; musical ite.ms were given by Misses Campbell (2), L. Mills, P. Coombs. Harper and Miss Winifred Hare, songs; Mrs Gladys Devereux and Miss Ida Cooper, recitations ; Miss Maud K. Stout, pianoforte solos; the Beekenham Quartet (Messrs K. G. Archer, F. S. Jackson, E. R. Pitman and W. H. Odell), part songs; Mr Charles E. McPeake, violin solos; Mr Mark Rolls, recitations; and Mr E. R. Pitman, songs. Misses Maud K. Stout and E. Anthony acted as accompanists. At the next meeting of the club a lecture is to be given by Mr J Johnson, M.A., on "Crowd Psychology."
DANCE AT WINTER GARDEN. At the Winter Garden on Thursday Bailey's Band supplied the music for ; the cabaret dance arranged by Mrs T. Aspell, Mrs 0. Watson, and Mrs J. M.
