ARMISTICE DAY. Armistice Day was appropriately and reverently observed yesterday, when the Mayor (Mr T. E. Gunnion), several councillors, Mr D. O'Connor, secretary of the R.S.A., and a fair number of citizens assembled at the Post Office. Promptly at 11 a.m. all foot and vehicular traffic ceased, and Bggler S. Burtenshaw sounded "The Last Post." A solemn two minutes' silence was then observed. The silence was also observed in the primary and high schools, and the children were addressed on the significance of Armistice Day. Bowling. Four rinks from Temuka journeyed to Fairlie on Thursday afternoon to play the first match of the season in connexion with the South Canterbury championship competitions. The teams were met and welcomed by the president of the Fairlie*Club, Mr A. <Bfcooper. Owing to the rain during the week the green was very heavy, but the overhead conditions were very pleasant. The following are the results, Fairlie names first: Cooper, Harper, Whitehead, H. Carlton (s) 10 v. Watson, Marshall, Shiels, Hunt (s) 33. w Wyber, Stamp, Howden, Scott (s) 14 v. Gourlev, Stewart, Kevs, Mclnnes (b) 25. Beckett, Potter, Ormandy, P. Carleton (s) 15 v. Scrimshaw, White, McCallum, Edwards (s) 21. Boulter, Shanks, Stamp, Brown (s) 20 v. Davis, McMillan, Pierce, Smith (s) 15. ■ Totals—Temuka: 3 wins, 54 points; Fairlie: 1 win, 59 points. Tha Weather. The weather conditions were much more congenial yesterday, although during the day a cold westerly breeze sprang up, making things unpleasant. At 10 a.m. the temperature was lower than for maiiy months past. The Lure of the Show. About 100 passengers joined the special train which left on a special oneday excursion yesterday to the Koyal Show at Christchurch. The bulk of the number comprised members of the farming community, who usually earmark this day as one of their fixed holidays during the year. Personal. Mr and Mrs D. Ferguson will leave this morning for a visit to the Hermitage. Messrs J. Bill, jun., and W. Kellahan, jun., return to-day after a motor tour of North Canterbury.
