CANTERBURY J.C.

METROPOLITAN MEETING. TO-DAY'S PROGRAMME. The Canterbury Jockey Club's Metropolitan Meeting will be concluded at Riccarton to-day, and another successful day's racing is promised by the satisfactory fields engaged. Most public interest will centre in the contest for the G. G. Stead Gold Cup, in which Limerick will make his second appearance at the gathering. Although it is generally anticipated his winning record will be continued, lie will haive three worthy opponents to keep him busy. The same tram and train arrangements will rule, and with a fine day there should be a large assemblage of the public. The day's programme is as follow: — 12.1 p.m.- SUBUKBAX HANDICAP, of 250 sovs. 9f. Rowley ..10 G Dubious .. 9 " Beaumont .. 10 4 Cornstalk .. 3 0 Red Fuchsia !> 12 Happy Queen 9 0 Thorndale .. 9 11 Grand National 9 0 Joy Bird .. 9 7 Wreath of The Harp . . 9 (i Myrtle 9 0 Gold Mint .. 9 5 Green Cloth .. O O Projector . . 9 fi No Response 9 0 Goosestpp . . 9 a This event was substituted, four years ago, for the usual hurdle race, and the club has been rewarded with a strong field. Rowley will make his reappearance, and, taking a line through his Masterton Cup victory, and his finishing run on .Saturday last, he is certain to be in keen demand. Red Fuchsia, who will be bracketed with Grand National, has a lot of speed, and ho and Projector, both hurdle winners at the Meeting, will run Rowley closely in public: favour. Tho contestants will bo ridden by hurdle and steeplechase jockeys. l-2.4C.-CRfiS.SY HANDICAP, of 350 govs. 7f. Beaumont . . 9 0 Lausanne . . 8 5 Rnlfcrite .. 9 0 Dlack Duko . . 7 12 Taboo .. 811 Monnghan ..■ 711 Receipt .. S 11 Gold Brick ..7 9 Rascal .. Sll Dismantle .. 7 9 Moorland . . 8 7 Arpent . . 7 7 ■Sir Roy . . 8 7 Royal Saxon 7 7 Yerliecrn .. ft 5 Kcnmore .. 7 7 Nincompoop S 4 Black Duko disappointed his followers earlier in the week, but ho was not favoured from tho dispatch in any of the three events to b© contested. He finished on well on Wednesday, after a tempestuous voyage, and if lie is ns good as his southern admirers claim, this is his opportunity to recoup the losses ho has entailed. Vertigera appeals the most; while Moorland and Rascal'cannot be brushed aside. The favourite may come from Vertigern. Rascal, and Black Duke. I.36.—PIONEER HANDICAP, of 300 sovs. For two-year-olds. sf. Silyor Rule .. 8 9 Full Feather 7 6 Goblin Market 8 1 Island Flicker .. 8 0 FastneßS 7 (5 Hljch Disdain 8 0 Banket .. 7 5 Chide . . 7 13 Te Atiawo .. 7 4 Concentrate .. 7 7 Louise .. 7 2 Amourette .. 7 6 Rigmarole .. 7 2 Thirteen two-year-olds wil] face the starter in this event, all with the exception of Amourette and High Disdain already having had racing at the Meeting. The latter gave promise at Wellington, and there were not a lew who believed he would win the Welcome Stakes, but he failed to opposo the flying Childsplay. If there is anything in that belief he should be able successfully to oppose to-day's field, but he will have a difficult task to beat Silver Rule, who has been most consistent since she opened her racing career. Concentrate is a likely sort, and may contest favouritism" with High IHsdain and Silver Rule. 3.2I.—MBMBEBS' HANDICAP, of 600 BOVB. 7f. Civility .. 811 SoWerite ~., 718 Shirley .. 810 Lausanne .. 7 3 Centrepiece ..88 Wingatui .. 72 Comic Soag .. 8 6 Joy Bird .. 7 0 Papercbase .. 8 2 Paper Boy .... 7 0 Booster .. 8 2 Wayward .. 7 0 This race should provide a good contest, some well-performed gallopers over the distance figuring in the field. Centrepiece, who won the event last year will have benefitted by his races on Monday and Wednesday, and the public will not need to be remindod that he must have racing before giving of his best. Civility would be favoured, but there is a possibility of her being reserved for the Fendal'ton Handicap. Shirley won the Easter Handicap over the same ground so easily that she must be respected, but it is doubtful if she is the same mare today. Comio Song will have a host of followers, and so will Paperchase, who ran a good race in the Stewards' Handicap, and was only narrowly beaten in the Criterion Handicap. Booster will be a better horse than on Wednesday, and he may be included with Centrepiece and Paperchase, as a trio Likely to be in most request.

8.6.-aBYMOtIR HANDICAP, of 230 sovs. 7f. Duke Abbey ..99 Beaming .. 74 wanderlnrt ~„ 9 0 Spode ». 7 4 Rotor ... 8 8 Greyflnch ..7 4 Kaloi ..8 8 Quantum .. 7 3 Moratorium .« 8 8 Skyquest ,«., 7 2 Battle Colours 8 7 Kindle .. 7 1 Shalimar ..8 7 Gay Bird „■„ 7 1 Motor Smash 7 8 Amor .. 7 0 Bromtell .. 7 6 Tembroney ■.-., 7 O Jarretlere .. 7 6 Dollar Fair Exchange 7 6 Prineeja 7 0 Mill Mercia 7 4 Thurso ..7 0 The biggest field of the day Will parade in the above, and the machine figures for the day should be enhanoed by -the large betting pool promised. Duke Abbey will carry nis weight with credit, as he won comfortably on the opening day, and has had a, rest since. Bronstell, Moratorium, and Battle Colours offer most opposition. 3.46. G. G. STEAD GOLD CUP, of 800 sovs (a gold cup value 100 sovs and 700 bovs in specie). Weight-for-age. 11m. 0. G. Dalgety's br g Footfall by Autumnus —Warstep 6yrs (F. E. Jones) .. . . ..9 3 B. L. Porter's b c Martarma by Martian —Per Arma 3yrs (C. Emerson) 712 ( Although Limerick will monopolise ] the betting in this popular event, a i good race will be witnessed. Comment on the four runners is not attempted, but Limerick should not be seriously c troubled, and is certain to go out a short priced favourite from Footfall, j Grand Knight, and Martarma. < 4.26.—STONYHURST HANDICAP, of -100 * sovs. For three-year-olds. lm. v Wild Pigeon 8 2 Don Joso .. 7 0 T Rotor .. 8 0 Lrtin Quarter 7 0 The Club struck misfortune in receiving only four acceptors out of 41 horses handicapped for this three-year-aid event. Rotor, Wild Pigeon/ and Don Jose will probablv be supported in that order. Set bi sail may improve on her Wednesday's ir effort, while if the going is. at all-soft, tl Caboo will have a large southern t'olowing. Battlement, Bennanee. Over- fr iaul, and Sir Roy all have possibilities, b( n fact,, there is material engaged to h< reate the best contest of the week's m )rogrnmme.
