STOCK FROM BRITAIN.
♦- • NECESSITY FOR IMPORTATIONS. The announcement by the president (Mr W. Perry) of the Royal Agricultural Society of New Zealand at the Royal Show yesterday, that negotiations are in hand to provide for the importation of stock from Britain, was the subject of favourable comment amongst breeders of stack during the afternoon.
''lf double quarantine—in Britain and in the Dominion —will allow us to import stock from Britain, I think it is a move in the right direction." said Mr E. Hay, president of the Canterbury A. and P. Association, to a representative of The P*ess. "At present, and for the past two or three years, the importation of stock from Britain has been prohibited consequent on the prevalence of foot and mouth disease. If there is very strict quarantine- before shipment.and after arrival in the Dominion, and if only the best quality stock from clean districts is imported, the decision to allow importation will be a step in the right direction. If such strict conditions are imposed and carried out there should be no likelihood of the introduction of foot and mouth disease into the Dominion. Importations of fresh blood from Britain are necessary in order to keep up our flocks and herds, and as the Dominion has obtained a •good name in respect of the export of sheep, it will not do to let the quality deteriorate."
