CANTERBURY CUP.

The main attraction naturally wa& the contest for the long-established Canterbury Cup, and the appearance of Limerick in the birdcage, his first at Riccarton for over eighteen months commanded attention. Although it was generally conceded that he would experience little difficulty in vanquishing his two older and well-performed opponents, there were not a few courageous speculators who exten/led modest support to both of the latter. Limerick, however, carried two-thirds of the machine total. The race could not be classed as very interesting, as after Limerick had allowed Footfall and Star Stranger to show the way for about a mile, he then shot to the front, and from that point the race was in his keeping. Star Stranger dropped otrt of the contest at the turn for home, and it was left to Footfall to chaso the favourite home. There was.a momentary oroclamation for Footfall a", he appeared to move up to Limerick commencing the run home, but the effort was short lived, as the champion put on the pace when his rider reminded him of his task, and he soon established a substantial break on his pursuer, passing the post with a four lengths' advantage. His victory was certainly registered in effortless _ manner, ancl the public showed their appreciation of the performance by greeting his return to the birdcage with an outburst of enthusiasm. The pace was nob by any means fast over the first mile, but "when Limerick went to the front it was speeded up, as the following sectional times will show: First six furlongs 1.24 1-5, mile and a quarter 2.17 3-5, last mile 1.41-2-5, and the full distance 3.59. The' New Zealand Oaks Stakes was robbed of a certain amount of interest by the field being reduced to four runners, the defections including Eulalie, whoso presence would have lent considerable interest to the race. As in the case of Limerick, Doree was considered unbeatable, and was supported accordingly, but she suffered a hollow defeat at the hands of Wild Pigeon, who had faeed the starter ou two occasions earlier at the Meeting, but never completed the course, owing to misfortune at the barrier. She is a well-grown filly by Leighton from the Boniform maxe Cooing, and is a halfsister to Spoony, a good winner in the north and in Australia Cooing was purchased in 1924 in foal to Leighton from Mr TV. G. Stead, and yesterday's winner was her foal. The totnlisator investments showed a slight falling-off, the sum of £41,034 being handled, as against £43,038 on the corresponding day last vear. The aggregate for the three concluded days stands at £150,425, as compared with £142.275 10s for the same days twelve months ago, representing an increase of £8149 10s.

The following are the details of the racing :

Limerick's Easy Victory. WILD PIGEON WINS OAKS. Jockey Club Handicap to Great Charter. Despite unpromising conditions overnight, the weather broke fine for the third day's racing, of the Canterbury Jockey Club, held at Riccarton yesterday, and the public again assembled in large numbers. The principal event was the Canterbury Cup, which was won handsomely by the champion Limerick, who had no difficulty in placing another important success to his already formidable list. The popular race for the New Zealand Oaks Stakes saw the defeat of an outstanding favourite in Doree by the Trentham-owned and trained Wild Pigeon, who gave her enterprising owner, Mr E. L. Riddiford, his first victory in the fillies' classic. The Jockey Club Handicap was annexed by Mr T. H. Lowry's Great Charter, whose chances were considered only eighth in favour in the field of ten. Investors did not fare well throughout the day's programme, only two favourites materialising. The track was only slightly affected by the rain, and comparatively good times were registered in each event.

maintained past the milt p&st. Going along the back Royal Game went to the front, followed by Cornstalk, Ark Royal, and Battlement in line together, with Sir Roy, Vaward, and Assurance next. Ark Royal and Royal Game were together crossing the top, closely followed by Battlement. David Garrick, and Sir Roy. Entering the straight the same order was maintained. Sir Roy made his run at the false- 'rail, and came on to win by two lengths from Battlement, with Yoma a nock away third. Vaward was elose up fourth, with the fast-finishing Oratrix next. Time, 2-8 1-5. Winner trained by owner, Riccarton.

The only starters. The three runners got away to a good start. Footfall was in front with two furlongs gone, Star Stranger and Limerick following at intervals of two lengths. The samo order was maintained over the first mile, which was very slow. Limerick went to the front at the mile and a quarter post, followed by Star Stranger, who, however, was alongside Limerick at the mile post. At the far turn Limerick made a • break of three lengths on Star Stranger, who was the same distance in front of Footfall. Turning into the straight, Footfall passed Star Stranger, and drew near Limerick, but the latter, when shaken up, went on to win comfortably by four lengths from Footfall. Star Stranger being five lengths further back. Time, 3.59. Winner trained by F. D. Jones, Riccarton. Winners of the race are:—

NOTES ON THE RACING. Hurdles to Eed Fuchsia. Owing to the rain overnight, Projector was withdrawn from the Port Cooper Hurdles, for which Kaikahu was made a slightly better favourite than Eed Fuchsia. Kaikahu flattered his backers for most of the journey. Over the last half mile he was closely attended by Eed Fuchsia, who, when called upon, took charge at the last fence, and won in easy fashion by five lengths from the favourite, who was four lengths in front of Aberfeldy, with Beauty Light and Koauau next, some distance from the winner. Dubious fell at the hurdle by the mile post. Ked Fuchsia was ridden a confident race throughout, and never allowed the leaders to got too far away. Although he lost .a little ground at the last hurdle but one, he had Kaikahu's measure before the final obstacle was reached. Aberfeldy again jumped badly. He made a promising move at the home turn, but he had little left to sustain his run, and was a very tired horse at the finish. Beauty Light was prominent until the final issue, but found the distance beyond him. Silver Peak's Sou. The two-year-old race, the Spring Nursery Handicap, saw all the acceptors paraded, Silver Paper, who had occupied second berth behind Childsplay in the Welcome Stakes being made a shortpriced public choice. The son of Silver Peak duly materialised after an interesting finish with Silver Eule, who was first to enter the course proper, from Goblin Market, Silver Paper, Childe, Noteworthy, and Concentrate, gilver Paper drew out inside the distance, and, galloping resolutely, gained the judge's verdict by a neck. Chide was a good third half a length away, a length in front of Concentrate, who finished strongly, after running wide at the turn into the straight. Goblin Market, Banket, and Noteworthy were nest. Silver Paper gives indications of de« veloping into a profitable stake-earner, and so emulate the deeds of his dam, Silver Peak, who won many races for Mr W. Stone, the breeder of the Paper Money youngster. Silver Eule, daughter of the speedy Silver . Link, again had to be content with a minor plac-

ing, making her record one win, three seconds, and two thirds, for her seven efforts to date. Chide was bred bv his owner-trainer, G. Murray Aynsley," and this was his first appearance'unde'r silk. Sir Boy Surprises. The Otaio Plate was a good betting race, the public pinning their faith to Oratrix, while there was a lot of support for Front Rank. A surprise was in store for investors, as Sir Eov took charge from a bunched field at the distance post, and won in convincing style by two lengths from Battlement, who finished on well from the top of the straight. The third horse was a neck away, practically in line with a bunch comprising Vaward, Oratrix, Peho, and Fresco, Ark Royal and Vesperus being next. Front Rank and Cornstalk were well back. Sir Roy was favourably placed earlv, and entered the straight in behind Ark Royal, Royal Game, David Garrick, and Battlement. He slipped through on the rails as the run homo was commenced and, finishing gamely, was not Teally seriously troubled. Battlement ran a promising race, and his future efforts can be viewed in a more favourable light than was the case a few weeks before the meeting.

Limerick's Canterbury Cup. The Canterbury Cup field was reduced to three runners by the non-produc-tion of Count Cavour. A rush immediately set in for Limerick's number, and he carried over two thirds of the machine total. The champion bowled along behind Footfall and Star Stranger until a mile and a quarter from home, when he- was sent to the front, and from there onwards always had the race in hand. Star Stranger was done with entering the straight the second time, and Footfall was two lengths behind Limerick commencing the run home. Ellis only had to move on the champion to put the issue beyond doubt, and he won with a lot in hand, by four lengths, Star Stranger finishing five lengths away from Footfall.

Great Charter's Easy Victory, The Jockey Club Handicap resulted in an easy victory for Great Charter, who led practically from end to end. Civility was the first to break the line from a splendid start, but after two furlongs had been covered, Great Charter took charge and led round the far .turn and into the straight, from Reremoana, Mandane, Set Sail, and Grand Knight, Centrepiece being last at this stage. Grand Knight made a determined effort commencing the run home, but was not able to make much impression on ,the leader, who crossed the line with a two lengths' advantage, Set Sail being four lengths away in third place. Civility was a close fourth, and then came Centrepiece, who finished strongly from the distance, Mandane, Reremoana, Overhaul, and Wingatui, with Beacon Light laSt.

Great Charter was allowed to pay a good price in spite of running close up to Star Stranger and Mask at the end of a mile and 'a quarter at Auckland, and being Agrion's nearest attendant entering the straight in the Derby. Grand Knight stuck to his task well, but had no chance of overhauling the winner. Set Sail ran a good race, considering her lack of recent racing, but none of the others showed signs of threatening danger in the run home. Staunch. Favourite Beaten. The New Zealand Oaks Stakes was. voted the best of propositions for DoTee, but another surprise was staged, Wild Pigeon outclassing the favourite in the run home, and recording one of the easiest wins of the Meeting. The field was reduced by the defections of Eulalie, Slaiimar, Luminanjt, and Skyquest, and the remaining quartet were sent away on even terms. Scrambler was the early leader, . and she and Vigilance joined forces along the back stretch in front of Doree and Wild Pigeon. Scrambler compounded at the far turn, and Dbreo joined Vigilance, and these two led to the straight entrance with Wild Pigeon moving up. Tho last-nam-ed passed Doree as soon as heads were turned for home, and was never afterwards troubled, to beat the favourite by five lengths. Vigilance being three lengths away third, Scrambler was half a furlong back last.

Outsiders Again. The public were again astray in their judgment in the Ashley Handicap, two outsiders paying the dividends. With the exception of No Response, all the acceptors went to the post, Avro being made a better favourite than Wanderlust. A good start was effected and when the field settled down, Avro showed in front from Hoylake, Grand National, Talisker, and Wild Work. Grand National had charge at the far turn, but was supported by Kindle at the home bend, and the latter entered the straight first from Talisker, Ladykiller, and Avro. Money Peer, who came from the rear of the field, put in his claim at the distance post, and cutting down the leaders, won an exciting race by a length from Grand National, who made a good run in the stretch and cut Avro out of second money by a neck. Kindle was a neck away fourth, in front of Talisker, Arikiwai, Thurnbell, and Hoylake. The winner was responsible for a splendid performance, as he was so far back in the early stages that his chance of participating in the final seemed hopeless. He had to go on the outside of the field entering the home journey, but he gave nothing else a chance in the last hundred yards. He was purchased as a yearling by his present owner at the Dunedin sales in 1926 for 275 guineas, and in his eleven starts as a two-year-old, occupied second place on two occasions, his first victory being this season, when he won at the Ashburton Meeting in September. Grand National, a stable-mate of Bed Fuchsia, was one of tho leaders to the home turn, but he lost his position. He renewed his effort in the straight and was galloping strongly at the finish. Avro again disappointed his many supporters, while the second favourite, Wanderlust, was badly placed near ,the tail of tho field throughout, and finished well back.

s Another to Chokebore. The day's programme concluded with the Avon Handicap, Pickaninny being the only withdrawal. Paleta and Lausanne monopolised the betting, the pair between them, carrying close on a third of the machine total. Gold Brick acted as pacemaker until the dying stages, where Sudden Storm, with an undeniable run on the inside from the distance post, squeezed through to gain a meritorious victory by a length from Lausanne, who finished on well to deprive Gold Brick of second honours by a narrow margin. Eascal was a good fourth, in front of Monoghan, Black Duke, and Moorland. The Chokebore representative paid a surprisingly good price. She was badly interfered with by Wild Pigeon in the Spring Plate on the opening day, and' had her chances ruined. This was her third success in four starts. She is a sister to tha brilliant Childsplay, and more wins are* in view for her. The Australian-bred Lausanne again ran a good race, and it is evident that his new owner will soon get a return for his outlay of 785 guineas. Gold Brick looked a winner nearing the post, but petered out at the business end. The favourite, Paleta, showed promise entering the straight, but as on the first \ day, failed to finish on. Dismantle, who I had a large southern following, did not | run up to expectations, __ <- «--■-_
