Mr D. S. Kelman, of the Boys' High School, has passed his -teachers' D examination. Mr T. R. T. Hooper, Native Inspector for the TV est Coast District (North Island) of the Department of Health, is on a visit to Christchurch. Recent arrivals at Warner's Hotel include: Messrs J. H. Grover (Timaru), D. Macdonald (Edendale), and H. Sidey (Hawarden). Cr F R. Cooke, who is on his way back to New Zealand, was granted further leave for one month by the City Council last evening. Mr J. 0. Fairbairn,. District Telegraph Engineer, is at present on annual leave. Mr D. E. Parton, City Telegraph Engineer, is acting in his stead. Guests 1 at the "United Service Hotel include: Messrs Beaumont Smith (Auckland), J. W. Hayes, (Waimate), and D. M. Philip (Dunedm). Dr. Charles Chilton is to be tendered a farewell social by the Canterbury District Council of the W.E.A. next Saturday evening. Dr. Chilton was the first president of the Canterbury District Council and also has been chairman of the Tutorial Class Committee. Messrs H. J. Dclargey (Hakataramea), O. Lewis (Ashburton), J. H. Powell (Greymouth), D. Cochrane (lovercargill), P. Campbell, J. Carmichael, W. Kennedy, R. Kennedy, R. Yardley (Southland), J. Christie (Balclutha), J. Swale. R. Swale (Lime Hills), A. Copland (Invercargill)' are guests at the Clarendon Hotel. Mr Arthur F. Clark, who has been Student Assistant at the Canterbury College School of Forestry, has recently passed the final examination for the Associateship of the School of Forestry. Mr Clark. is the first student to complete the Associate course and will be the first to be awarded the distinction of a forestry diploma granted by a New Zealand University College. Mr H. E. Duff; Superintendent of Mails at Christchurch, retired yesterday on superannuation after 40 years' service. Mr Duff. has been two years and a half in Christchurch and prior to that lie had considerable experience on the San Francisco boats as mail agent. Mr Duff will go on six months' leave of absence, after which he will reside in Wellington. Yesterday Mr Duff was met by the staff and presented with an eight-day clock for himself, and a tea-set for Mrs Duff. The presentations were made by the Chief Postmaster, Mr H. P. Donald, who referred to Mr Duff's long and excellent service. Several others also spoke.
