TWO MODERNISED LINERS. "De Luxe" is the most popular adjective to-day. It has an irresistible appeal to tho public, but it is often woefully misapplied. However, it appears to truthfully describo the changes that have been effected in the New Zealand Shipping Company's liner Remuora, due at Lyttelton this morning. This mail steamer, with her sister-ship Iluahine, has been extensively altered in keeping with the ideas of modern travel. In 1922 the Remuera was converted to an oii-burner, and in 1923 the Buahine was also converted to an oil-burning vessel. Both, in conjunction with the Rotorua, which is also an oil-burnar, maintain a direct service to and from the Unitod Kingdom, nuking the voyage via Panama Canal in from 34 to 86 days. It speaks volumes for the organisation when it is stated that very large alterations have been carried out in the Remuera and Ruahine without withdrawing the ships from active service. The accommodation now provided is reported as second to none ii any passenger ship trading between tho United Kingdom, and Australia or New Zealand. Passenger slipping companies now realiso the demand for single-berth cabins, and also for private bathrooms. In fitting new accommodation the Now Zealand Shipping Company has considered the convenience of passengers in this, respect. In the first saloon the Remuera now has 84 singleberth cabins and eight suites with private bathroom attached. On tho boat deck 20 now cabins have been constructed, and these are chiefly single-bedstead rooms of an exceptional size. There are also four suites with private bathrooms on thi3 deck. In addition to the private rooms, ample bathroom accommodation is provided for all passengers occupying cabins on the boat deck. . Other .improvements include a new firstclass smoking-room . with verandah lounge attached. The smoke-room situated on the boat deck has been luxuriously furnished, and fitted with the very latest appointments for the convenience of card players and others. A notable feature will bo seen in the installation of portable reading lamps. Tbess will appeal to all who look for a quiet pipe and a book. By an extension of the promenade deck, second saloon passengers have been allotted additional deck space. The second saloon smoking-room and lounge have been remodelled and extended. These rooms aire newly furnished throughout with a view to the further comfort of second saloon passengers.

The Remuera now carries 62 first saloon 92 second saloon, and 128 third-class passengers in permanent accommodation.
