SWIMMING TOURS.

LACK OF ENTHUSIASM. The attitude adopted by certain Dominion swimming organisations in regard to the proposed visit of a Surf Life-Saving team from Australia to New Zealand was criticised at tho annual meeting ,of the Canterbury Surf and Life-Saving Association last evening. The proposal was referred to in a letter from the Australian Surf LifeSaving Association that a team • of about eight men should visit New Zealand during December, 1929, and January, 1930,. visiting Auckland, Hawke t»Bay, Taranaki, Wellington, Christchurch, Timaru, and Duiiedin. Such a team would contain men from the surf life-saving movement, Amateur Swimming Association, and R.L.S.S., and would, be composed not only of expert. life-savers, but llrst Class stillwater swimmers. The cost of the tour would be about £6OO which it was presumed the New Zealand bodies interested would pay. The secretary (Mr D. V. Wilson) said the New Zealand Swimming Council and Royal Life-Saving Society had "practically turned dog on the scheme after seeming to favour it . "TTbey want us to raise the £SOO or £6OO required and then come in," said the chairman (Mr O. A. Cooper). Mr S. K. Bassett suggested that it was a lack of funds which was troubling the Swimming Council. "Lack of enthusiasm," remarked several delegates. The secretary said the Association could not afford to pay the price asked to enable the tour to be undertaken.

Mr H. Throp said he considered it "absolute rot" that the proposed tour should cost £6OO. The tour should not cost more than £350. The matter was deferred.
