"THE PRESS" AND THE FARMER
TO THE EDITOE OP THE PRiSS. Sir,—l have been favourably impressed time and again by your consistent battling on behalf of the interests of primary (producers, and there is no doubt, as The Press asserts, that an increase of our primary products is an important question in the development of the Dominion. I find myself in accord with The Press nine times out of ten, on all questions affecting the welfare of the ■ community. I believe, as The Press states,. the Arbitration Court should be abolished. Failing this, at least the preference clause to unionists should be deleted. Again The Press is right when it intelligently directs that any unnecessarily high protective tariff acts as a boomerang, i True, I am a farmer, but apart from ' questions affecting farming pursuits, I am generally in line. The Press has practical views on educational questions, and tends to check enthusiasts likely to develop into cranks or faddists. Another question and I shall conclude. I agree -with Thb Press that a change of Government will not cause a boom in trade at present, nor will it enable, anyone to pick up gold pebbles on the beach. Governments can come and go as far as my position is concerned, so my view is unprejudiced. I bought my land too dear Just as you can buy gold too dear in the way of high protective tariffs. The difficulties I have had to contend with, might have tested a man's balanced reasoning, but I feel convinced, so long as I am so often in agreement with The Press, my reasoning faculties have not suffered to any alarming extent.—Yours, etc. WAYBACK FARMER.
