EDUCATION IN FIJI.
MR J. CAUGHLEY APPOINTED DIRECTOR. (press association telegram.) WELLINGTON, November 4. The Colonial Office in London through the Governor of Fiji, having communicated to the Government of New Zealand that it was prepared to appoint Mr John Caughley, director of education for Fiji, Mr Caughley has intimated his acceptance. He leaves about November 20th, and will be followed after the first rainy season by Mrs and Miss Caughley. Interviewed, Mr Caughley said that four years ago he visited Fiji, and Samoa, where, by arrangements with the administrations concerned, the New Zealand Education Department agreed to assist in and supervise certain phases of education in each of hese groups. He had then assisted in drawing up a scheme of co-operation with Fiji, and in formulating a revised education policy and system in Samoa under the Administrator. Now, as a result of the report of the Royal Commission in Fiji, which was presented last year there is to be a development of European education and co-ordina-tion of many varied educational units of Fijian and Indian education. The whole field presented a problem of quite unique interest.
