Last year the birth-rate was only 17.8 per* 1000 in England and Wales—the lowest in Europe, save the Swedish, and actually one per 10C0 below the French. In 1920 some 957.994 children were born in England and Wales. In 1926, from a larger number of parents of suitable age, only 694.897 were born. The drop in six years is one of 263,097 births, or of over 27 per cent... It is impossible to guess how low another six years will bring; the .figure.
