SOCIAL AND , PERSONAL. Mr 11. Harris, juu. (Timaru) is visiting the North Island. Mr L. 13. Ord has returned Canterbury. General Clark (England) left yesterday for Quecnstown. Messrs Preston and Berry (Timaru) left for Pukaki yesterday.
Magistrate's Court. A sitting of the. Magistrate's Court took place before Mr C. R. Orr Walker, S.M., yesterday. Edward Gillespie, who was charged with committing forgery by wrongfully signing a telegram in the name of William Gillespie without authority, with committing forgery by wrongfully sending a telegram in the name of one, Legget, without authority, and against whom a complaint was made for sureties of the peace on the ground of fear of bodily harm, was remanded to appear on November 9th. Bail was refused in the meantime.
Percy Grieve, charged with breaking and entering the dwelling of Emily Harriet Cole and stealing two gold rings of a total value of £4-5, was remanded to appear on November Oth.
General News. P.G. Brd. W. J. Tonkin presided over a good attendance at the fortnightly meeting of the Loyal Timaru Lodge of Oddfellows. One candidate was proposed, and three candidates were initiated l . Tho sick report, which stated there were few members on the funds, was adopted. Notice of motion was given to the effect that the Lodge business commence at. a later hour after the enforcement of the Daylight Saving Act. Tho secretary reported that during the present year thirtyfive members had been initiated, fifteen of whom had been through the juvenile department. In his report for October, which was before the committee of the Main School at its monthly meeting, the headmaster (Mr B. H. that of an average total roll of 579.1, the average attendance, totalled 257.9, several pupils being absent on account of influenza. . A social held recently to raise funds for,the Main School iibrary returned £ls.
The Levels County Council has purchased 3i acres of land at Washdyke to house its team and plant. The site has a double frontage and cost £65 per acre.
Contributions by the Government, the Levels County Council, and tho settlers interested towards the cost of the erection of a bridge over the To Ngawai river opposite the -Cave township amounted to £l4ll. A tender has been let by the Council. During last month the Levels County Council's road ranger impounded 7S cows, 26 horses, and 30 sheep.
"Ridiculous Statement." Referring to- recent criticism of the state of the Main North road from Washdyke to Arowhen.ua, at a meeting of the Levels County Council, the chairman (Mr T. B. Garrick) said it was ridiculous to say that the road was in a disgraceful state. He had driven'over the "road and was satisfied that there was very little room for complaint. During the past seven months the Council had spent £Bl3 on the road from the town boundary to Arowhenua, which-amounted tor more than £BO per mile. The Council spent quite enough on main roads; there was, a,cry now to.the effect that the .riding rpads were, being neglected. It seemed that some fault was found whatever the: Council, did... . .
