THE PETROL TAX.
TO THE SDITOB 0» THE PBISB. Sir,—Seeing that Parliament has decided on imposing a petrol tax, it is not perhaps worth while, but as an old and experienced motorist, I feel inclined to offer criticism. I regard the petrol tax as illogical. It is tvres which wear out roads. It is well known to experienced motorists that the amount of petrol used is bv no means exactly in proportion to tho damage dono to roads, so much depending on tho speed at which cars are driven, while the- wear in tyres must bo in CXa '< t Proportion to the wear on the road. The petrol tax must bear henvilv on people who are obliged to travel on immetalled roads, as these roads, though easy on tyres, arc usually gluttons on petrol. Another point 'is that the petrol tax necessitates a crop of exemptions, each providing a means of evading the tax and adding expense and complication to its collection, conditions which do not apnly to a tvre tax.—lours, etc., ...
