LYTTELTON TUNNEL.
STATEMENT BY PRIME MINISTER In reply to a letter requesting^-a statement showing the present position regarding the electrification of the Lyt-telton-Christchurch line, a letter was received at last night's meeting of the executive of the Canterbury Progress League from the Prime Minister, stating that, as far as the calling of tenders was concerned, the position was as follows: —Tenders for poles closed on March 9th, and the majority of the poles required had been delivered at Woolston. Another for the overhead gear was placed in August last, and delivery was expected on or before March 30th, 1928. An order had been placed for the material for ther substations, and delivery was expected on March 20th, 1928. A tender had been accepted for the locomotive required. Delivery was expocted not later than October 30th, 192 a. The surveys of the pole line and the suspensions had now been completed, stated the letter, and the whole layout of the work had been pegged, while a store and workshop had been erected at Woolston*. Arrangements were well in hand in connexion with the substation site at Woolston, and it was anticipated that the erection of the poles would be commenced during November in readiness for the arrival of the overhead gear in March next
