PERSONAL.

: GREYMOUTH, November 2. Mr and Mrs F. M. Dennehy vili ] eave to-morrow for Christchurch. Sister K. Maloney, who recently resigned her position as sister in charge of the Greymouth Old People's Home will leave for Christchurch to-morrow. Miss Maud Mcintosh, who has severed her connexion with the firm of Messrs Tymons and Co., was met by the staff last evening, and presented with a solid leather suitcase and handba" Mr Kim Williams, who was injured at Mitchell's recently, is still incapacitated, but is making satisfactorv progress towards recovery. The death occurred at the Grey Hospital this morning of Mr John O'Brien after an illness of about three months' duration. Deceased, who was a native of Ballarat, was fifty years of a»e and had lived in Blaketown for the past fourteen years. He was a co-operative coal miner by occupation, and before coming to Blaketown had worked in the quartz mines at Eeefton. He leaves a widow and family of two sons and five daughters. The funeral'of the late Mrs Letitia Affleck took place at Karoro this morning, when there' was a large attend- | ance, which included members of the Hibernian Society, who acted as pallbearers. The services at St. Patrick's Church, and at the gravesidd were conducted by the Rev. Father Quinn The death of Mrs Clifton, wife of Mr Arthur Clifton, of Rimu, took place at the Westland.. Hospital on Monday, evening after a short illness. She was a daughter of the late Mr-and Mrs D. Marr, and was 56 .years of age. She is survived by'her'husband, two daughters, and two sons. The funeral took place this afternoon to the Hokitika cemetery.

Kopara Hot Springs. During last week-end Mr E. S. Dollimore, officer in charge of the Greymouth Tourist Bureau, visited the Kopara district for the purpose of reporting to his Department on'the matter of giving improved access to tho Kopara hot springs. In conversation with a.reporter, Mr Dollimore.said that by cutting.another track the!bad fords could be eliminated and easy access be given to the springs under any-weather conditions. In the course of his' investigations Mr Dollimore found that the waters at Kopara registered a uniform heat of 125 degrees Fahrenheit. The. waters from the springs give off a pungent sulphurous odour which.could easily be detected- several chains away. In addition to the main spring, which supplies the bath, there are several subsidiary springs which run close to a cold water stream. '

Coastal Road. It is understood;' that the plana, for the Punakaiki and Porari bridges «are now in course of preparation, and the work of. bridging these two rivers on the Grey-Westport coastal road will be put in hand early.next year.

Wailsend Mine. •A*.fine sample.of coal from the Wallsend mine was brought to Greymouth to-day for shipment to Auckland. The consignment, which weighed about one ton, was taken from the dip section of the mine, the coal being jet black and very hard. If the quality of the Wallse'nd mine's product can be judged from its appearance, it should soon conimand a ready, market for indus-trial-and household requirements. Improved Public Offices.

...During his visit to-. Wellington, last week, Mr: J. McLean, president of-the Greymouth Chamber, of ''Commerce, interviewed the Government authorities with regard to the. erection'-'of a'new Customshouse- ..and... additions -•to the Grey Post and Telegraph Office. It is understood that Mr McLean, received an • assurance that the ■ work ■ will' be: put in hand.as early.as possible."" Omoto Subsidence. _ The work of protecting the •. railway line at Omoto, which was affected through river erosion last week, was put in hand to-day. - Limestone rock from the Grey quarry is being utilised.

Grey Bar. The Harbour Board last evening decided to request full particulars from a Dunedin company of a process which it was claime<J would.deepen the river channel, and also scour away the bar. ■'

Magistrate's Court. At.the Magistrate's Court to-dajybe-fore Mr A..Naylor, J;P., James Moye, who pleaded guilty to a charge of vagrancy, was sentenced to four months' imprisonment with hard labour in Paparua Prison. Anthony Shannon, who pleaded guilty to a charge of drunkenness in.. Tainiii. street yesterday, was • sentenced to seven days', imprisonment.

Golf. Fine weather favoured the Greymouth Golf Club for the closing of the season at Omoto to-day, when the presentation of prizes was made by' Mr and Mrs A. Smith, the respective captains of the men's and; ladies' clubs.' During the afternoon a "mixed foursome match was played, which was won j by Mrs Thomas and Brown. Results' of other competitions were as follows: Approaching and putting: Men, W.-.P.; McCarthy; ladies, Miss E. Steer. Putting: Men, Mcintosh; la'dies,. Miss Berry. | The • following were the winners of [ the principal. trophies during the season:—Men's senior championship, W. P. McCarthy; men's junior championship, C. James; Orkney Cup, G. A. Revell; Four Horsemen Cup, L. S.. Casey. Ladies' senior championship, Mrs J. ' W. Hannan; ladies' junior champion-' ship. Miss R. Steer; Ogioto Cup, Miss X. Tennent; L.G.TJ. silver medal, Mrs -TV. Fletcher; L.G.TJ. bronze medal, Mrs P. G. McCarthv.

Athletics. Owing to the depression in the timber industry, the Kotuku Sports Club has decided to abandon the New Zealand axemen and woodchoppers' championships, which were to have been held in Greymouth. The club will now hold its meeting at Kotuku on February 4th 1925. ' '

Westport By-Election. The by-election for the vacancy on the Westport Borough Council resulted in the election of Mr. Thomas Fairhall,-. who received a majority of 73 votes over his opponent, Mr Thomas Parfitt. Only 728 votes were recorded out of: a roll of over two'.thousand names.
