GREAT DRAPERY STORES.
SYDNEY ESTABLISHMENTS. (fbom oub own COBRESPOKMNT.) I SYDNEY. October 20. j One sometimes wonders whether ! there will be sufficient business to justify, even in a city like Sydney, the vast establishments that are etching a new sky line in all directions. It seems to be clearly a practical expression of unbounded faith in the future of the country, irrespective of what Government might be in power. Or these magnificent new structures, one of the most notable is that which will shortly be occupied by the old-estab-lished firm of David Jones, whose timehonoured home opposite the General Post Office in George street, has been one of the city landmarks. k The underground railway has changed the face of that part of the city which its vast new stores are to occupy, with frontages to Market, Castlereagh, and Elizabeth streets. The value of the new building, to which finishing touches are now being given will exceed £l,000,000. With one of the principal underground stations -opposite it, David Jopes, Ltd., are now in one of the future key positions of the city. Their present property, in George street, which will be carried on, it is understood, as a store for men's goods, will also be within coo-ee of another of the big underground stations. The removal of the general business to the new premises, after ninety long years on the present site, will be quite an event in the city's changing history. ,- ! Extensive additions of a very solid character are also l>eing made to the great drapery establishment of Farmer and Company, so well known on account of their broadcasting station and other features.
