THE ELECTRIC HARE.
AUCKLAND MINISTERS' REQUEST TO MAYOR. [THE PRESS Special Service.] AUCKLAND, November 1. In connexion with the proposal to introduce mechanical coursing.to Auckland the Auckland Ministers' Association has addressed the following letter to . the Mayor (Mr George . Baildou): — "Your Worship cannot but be aware from the Press- and other sources of the enormous stimulus given to the betting and gambling evil in /Great Britain and elsewhere by this form of so-called sport. Neither can you be ignorant of the social and moral ills that are likely to follow in its train here in Auckland, to say nothing of its economic extravagance and folly at a : me o f widespread unemployment and distress such as the present. Yet, as the Association has learned with pained surprise, tho names. of. your Worship and other public men have, notwithstanding, been associated with the proposal to commercialise the,: sport in this city.' If vo.u - value . the - economic, social; and moral .well-being of Auclclarid'j the good' repute of its public men, and especially the. safeguarding of its homes and character of its young life, -we would respectfully urge you to refuse to lend your, name' and influence to so pernicious' and perilous a project as this of tin-hare racing." The letter concludes by pointing out tha<t the Association represents the majority of non-Episcopal Churches in Auckland and suburbs. A letter in similar terms has been ?ent to the chairman of the Auckland Harbour Board (Mr H.-R. Mackenzie).
