(Received November Ist; 7.15 p.m.) MELBOURNE, November 1. Eain fell overnight and early this morning, but the weather was fine, though dull, when the races began. There was an enormous attendance, including several New Zealanders. Seven ex-New Zealand trainers wero represented in the Cup field.
Spear Maiden was scratched, for the Cup at 11.9 a.m. to-day, and Bacchus at 11.55. After being fourth in the early stages Deauville led at tho last hurdlo and won nicety. He had not won in his three previous races. The time was a race record. 11.I 1 . Leonard rodo the winner. Fuji San scored a brilliant victory in tho High-Weight. He won tho 1 samo race last year. His. rider, J. Pike, has won this race in three successive years. Maid of tho Nook finished brilliantly and won tho Nursery narrowly. She cost 80 guineas as a yearling, and has a record of two wins and a second in four starts, having won £ISOO in stakes. There was an exciting race for the Cup. Silvius looked a winner at the distance. Trivalve was sixth at the mile, but finished best and scored brilliantly. Son o' Mine finished with a phenomenal run after being last at'.tho home turn. Merry Mint showed up for a long way, but Pilliewinkie was never dangerous. The winner and his rider were accorded a remarkablo ovation which lasted for some minutes. The rider, It. Lewis, had his fourth victory for the race. It was trainer J Scobie's fourth win. Trivalve is the first horse to win the Derby and Cup double since Patrobas won in 1915.
! Lewis is 49 years old and Scobie 67 They were congratulated by the Gover-nor-General, Lord Stonehaven. Lewis stated that he had a'good ride. Never further back than tenth, lie followed Reed on Silvius. He considers that Trivalve won because lie, had two strains of Musket blood, against Silvius's one. Ashley Reed stated that he thought Silvius was a v certainty afc the turn, but the horse failed in the run home Trivalve was bred by his owner, Mr E. E._ D. Clarke, who is at present on a fishing excursion in New Zealand. The fractional times for the Cup were: First four furlongs in 51i, next four in 50J, the succeeding four in 525, the concluding six furlongs in 1.16£, and the last mile in 1.42 J. Clan Robert, after being fifth early, led into the straight in the steeplechase and scored a popular victory. He was ridden by the veteran E. Moon. Clan Robert 'is trained by J. Scobie. Navargo fell and was fatally injured. Bean Hania was a long way back in the opening stages of the Yan Yean Stakes, but finished with a great burst and won brilliantly. He was ridden by F. Dempsey. Affirm took charge eooa after the straight was entered and led past the stand from Sacedon, Rawhetu, Silvius, Trivalve, Merry Mint, and Star d'Or, with Valaisian, who began badly, last. On leaving the straight Affirm way still in command, and nine furlongs from home wa« a length in front, followed by Rawhetu, and then caima Piastoon, Sacedon, Merry Hint, Silvius, Star d'Or, and Pilliewinkie, Son o' Mine was now last. Star d'Or moved up fast near the mile, and at the six furlongs post was second to Affirm. The others prominent included Silvius, Rawhetu, Trivalvo, Sacedon, and Murillo, while Bicolour was moving up. Son o' Mine was still last. Affirm led at the turn and was first into the straight, leading i Silvius, Bicolor, Trivalve, and Textile in that | order. Silvius was in front at the distance, but Trivalve finished best and won by a length. Son o' Mine, who finished with a remarkable run, was a length and a quarter away third. Textilo was fourth, and then came Bicolour, Devonshire, Murillo, Affirm, Star d'Or, Tangible, Beedos, Eridanus, Imitator, and Pilliewinkie, with Thracian last. Time, 3.24.
